i RAMUS A DISAPPOINTMENT. BOUGHT BY PRESIDENT WILLIAMS FOR THE WATERH0USE CUP AND RUNS LAST. Light Wool Comes Up from Santa Anita and Follows Precedents in Winning the Yosemite Handicap, but Fantastic Should Have Boetn the Winner. Oakland, Cal., February 26. — Ramus, the easy winner of last Saturdays Cup Preliminary, was acquired during the morning by Tbopias H. Williams with a view of winning the Waterhouse Cup. The price paid was ,000. The big son of Governor For-aker, which had never until he was saddled for the race, ran in Mr.. Williams colors, was in the longdistance feature at Oakland today aud was badly beaten, being actually in difficulties at the end of the first mile of the two-mile journey. Race-goers had been encouraged to back this horse with extreme confidence because of the change of ownership and were dumbfounded over the result. It developed after ■ thorough investigation that the bandages on his fore and hind legs had been too tightly applied. This was sufficient to impede a free striding horse like Ramus. On top of this he came out of the race limping perceptibly and there were good judges present who expressed the opinion that he might not be able to face the starter In the big race next Saturday. Again did a Santa Anita prepared horse appear on the local racing scene and vanquish some of the best horses in training here in a stake race. This time it was Light Wool from R. L. Thomas big racing establishment. Light Wool was added late the night before owing to a delay in transit. He was the medium of the traditional "killing." backed down from 4 to 1 to 18 to 5. and came home in front of Fantastic. Cloyne. Krnka, Red Leaf, Logis-tilla aud Gargantua. The runner-up was the real heroine of the race and but for W. Kellys bungling work in the saddle would surely have captured the race. Todays card was very attractive, and improved racing was the result. Only one favorite, however, was successful, aud that was Bye Bye II. , in the fifth race, but every winner was well hacked and the public enjoyed a satisfactory afternoons sport.
