JACK ATKINS STAKE RACE. PROVES HE CAN STAY AS WELL AS SPRINT BY TAKING REX HANDICAP. Saverus Defeats Sainesaw in a Close Finish — Heine a Lucky Winner — Owners at New Orleans to Try Havana Racing. New Orleans. La., March 3. — Barney Schreibers good Sain colt. Jack Atkin. once again demonstrated Ills hifeli class liy winning the rich Bra Handicap, in which one of the liest hand of handicap horses in lliis section started. The performance was the more meritorious on account of the mile and a furlong over which the race is rim being supposed to be a distance iinsnited to .Tack Atkin. While lie won easily, his hackers near the finish experienced an unpleasant sensation and heaped all sorts of execration on K. Rice, who was astride of him. The Xchreiber crack, after wearing Angelus down on the stretch turn, went into a long lead and had his opponents thoroughly beaten, but in Ihe fiual furlong Bice began easing him up "and almost stopgied him to a slow canter. Meanwhile I.e.- on Old Honesty was working like a Trojan and barely failed to get up in time. Jack Atkin winning by a neck. The Burlew and ONeill entry, consisting of Juggler ami Angelus. was favorite, but ran far below expectations and failed to be serious factors after g »ilig three-quarters. Favorites were beaten in most of the races, but the thirty-nine layers again sustained heavy losses as all of the winners were smartly backed. Tight finishes prevailed in the third and again in the fifth race. Goldproof, under a good ride, won Ms third from Quadrill • and Bellwether. The ihree at all times were practically on even terms and fought it out hard through the final furlong. Severus. under Notters skillful riding, won the fifth race after a strenuous drive to outstay Sainesaw.
