PLATERS DAY AT OAKLAND. ORDINARY HORSES IN ALL RACES, BUT TRACK IS THRONGED ALL THE SAME. May Amelia Wins the Principal Race of the Day — Dick Wilson and Mendon Repeat Their Recent Successes in Good Style. Oakland. Cal.. March 3.— The majority of the forty iNNikmakers comprising the big ring lost heavily on the afternoons operations, the racing being very formliil and the lietting. for some unknown rea son, being brisker than usual. May Amelia won the main race after a lively struggle with Dorado and recent winners to repeat at good prices were Dick Wilson and the rejuvenated old gelding Men-don. Walter Millers riding engagements tomorrow are El Picaro. Burleigh and Mansard. The last named has very dickey underpinning and Is on the verge of a break-dowa. Jack Keen.- says that his hors- will win if he Mm not break down in the race. A. G. Blakeley left tonight for Los Angeles and will return here next Sunday on his way east. Jockey Hayes was fined 5 and Kirschbaum set down for three d ays by the starter for misliehavior at the post in the first race. N. L. Walters bid up St. Kdgar. the wlnuer of the first race from o0 to .2iM . George Miller bought his horse in for additional. It has eveloped that Prestige was injured in his last raj, which accounts for his bad showing. S. C. Hildreth has sent word in an authoritative way that neither Meelick nor Vncle will be sent to New Orleans for the Derbys. Four favorites, St. Edgar, Mrs. OFarrell, May Amelia and Nigrette. all at good but receding prices in the betting, scored at Oakland today. The two other winners. Dick Wilson and Mendon, were by some inexplicable process of ring reasoning held very cheaply in the market despite their very recent convincing victories. Mendon. which opened as good as ten to one, and was twelve to one in some ho, ks. was the medium of a "killing" by his owner. A. F. Dayton. The jockey honors were evenly distributed among W. Miller, A. Walsh, Butwell. Keogh. Hildebiand and Gilbert. It was only by conspicuously superior riding skill that the opening and closing races went to public choices, the winners in the remaining four rac. s proving superior to their opposition. The card was of the off-day variety, but produced excellent and satisfactory sport, and was enjoyed by fully tf.ooo spectators. M. Reis will send his string to Santa Anita this week. It includes Entre Nous. Belle of Iroquois and Dr. Coleman. The crack W. OB. Macdonougb. two-year-old, Duke of Milan, arrived from the southern track today. A. F. Daytons crack mare, Soufriere. has been retired to the stud. She will be bred to El Rio Rey.
