MEELICK IS BEATEN BY STANLEY FAY. California Derby Winner Meets Defeat in the Preliminary — Dugan and Shilling in Riding Duel. Los Angeles. Cal.. March 3.— in the Derby trial today Stanley Fay, W. Walkers crack colt, handily disposed of Meoliek. which recently beat him in the California Derby. Stanley Fay was superbly ridden by C. H. Shilling, who reserved his mount for the stretch run. while the Walker Derby candidate easily overhauled M -click and held him safe to the finish. Stanley Fay will probably be an equal choice with Meelick in the Derby next Saturday. .1. H. Heed, which ran Lee Rose to a head the other day. was made the heavily backed choice to win the two-year old race, but ran sluggishly in the early running, then closed a big gap and took third place. Steel, the winner, showed brilliant -peed and wen easily from Inclement. Royal Qa en. well ridden by Dugan, ran neck and neck with Cardinal to the stretch where she shook him off and outstayed Laudable under a mild hand ride. The finish between the second and third hors s was exciting, the former overtaking the tiring Lack root in the last stride. One of the biggest upsets of the season came with the defeat of Meelick by Stanley Fay. which was coupled with Centre Shot as the Walker entry. Another backset for the speculatively inclined was the victory of Avnntellus over the favorite. Aucas-sin, in the fifth race. The race was won by the superior riding of Shilling ovi r Dugan. The two star riders met in the Derby preliminary and there Shilling put it over his rival on Meelick. Shilling rode three winners and Dugan two and the two divided the first five laces between them. . I. T. Chlnn has purchased from John Shields the seven-year-old Meddler stallion. Go Betww»u, lor a Reported price of ,000. and will ship him to Leonatus Stock Farm at Harrodsburg, Ky., next Thursday for service iu the stud. Chinn will send along a nuinlwir of mares which he has either been racing here or has recently purchased. The judges have raised the ban on Sly Ben, the horse which was suspended when bookmaker Beu Berk and jockey Grand were ruled off pending an investigation. Among the improvements which are contemplated at Santa Anita next year are a turf track inside the present mile and an eighth oval and a steeplechase course. The latter is a feature of racing which the founder of Santa Anita Park does not look upon with favor. It is understood that the objections of President Baldwin in that respect have been over come and the steeplechase course will be in readiness for the opening of the next winters season. The twenty-three books did a big days business and had much the better of the days speculation.
