Los Angeles, Cal., March 14. — Racing Secretary E. C. Smith presented one of the best cards of the season, and the result was a noticeable increase in the attendance, the grandstand being crowded with a big half-holiday crowd. The victory of Meelick at New Orleans and the running of Big Bow and Livius in the Thornton Stakes at Oakland, were greeted with cheers from the grandstand. Their successes spoke volumes for the good horses that have raced here almost the entire season. Colonel Jack, running for the first time in the colors of R. F. Carman, won the mile handicap in a canter, running the distance in 1:38, and it is the opinion of his owner that he would have lowered the track record had there been anything in the race to force hiin to do his best. Carman more than won out the horse in wagers. Light Wool essayed to keep pace with the winner, but tired near the end. Melton Cloth was taken sick in the paddock and the judges excused hiiu from starting and allowed twenty minutes for a new book on the Colin Stakes. Ten of the best youngsters went to the post and after a delay of four minutes were sent away to a good start. Aunt Aggie set a fast pace to the stretch, closely followed by Iee Rose and Del Cruzados. Near the end Musgrave took Lee Rose to the front and finished cantering. Under a hard ride Del Cruzados outstayed the early pacemaker. Shillings splendid display of jockeyship in the last two races was one of the salient features of the days sport. The entire Pasadena Stable will be sold at auction April 1. Twenty-flve lvooks drew in today and they received a bard drubbing.
