If Meelick captures the City Park Derby he will take rank with Claude as a winner of Derbys and is obviously a colt of more than ordinary m Tit. Bred by John K. Madden and sired by a horse Edward Corrigan brought back on his return from his racing venture in Kngland, he was bought from Madden last year for the reported price of 2,000. Prior to his purchase he had won a purse and two stake races for Madden. There was a dash of live and a half furlongs for maidens at Slvepshead Bay June 27, in whicli he defeated Besom, June Swift. Julia Powel and fourteen more aspiring youngsters in l:06j . Two days later he ran second to Colin for the Great Trial Stakes, with Monopolist. Stamina, Cohort, Firestone, Chapultepec and six more good ones behind him. He was not successful at Saratoga, but at the Sheepshead Bay fall meeting he won the Sapphire Stakes and Great Fastern Handicap. In the Sapphire he defeated Lawrence P. Daley, Live Wire and Nimbus at five and a half furlongs in 1:05|, carrying US pounds. .In the Great Fastern he had up 120 pounds and defeated Firestone, 121, Julia Powel. 100. Live Wire, 107, Ben Fleet, 118, ILknows. 100, Spooner, 114, Cowan, 102, Masque, 105, Incognito, 107 and Mom-bassa. 111, at three-quarters of a mile In 1:13J, a very good performance. Taken to California, he ■ won a purse and the Pasadena Handicap at Oakland for Hildreth before the close of last year. This year Meelicks career has been one to gratify any owner. His first start was at Santa Anita. February 18, in a six-furlongs sprint, which he won from Mark Antony II., Old Timer and Canardo in 1:12. Then he went up to Oakland I ami won the California Derby in a canter by six lengths in front of Stanley Fay, running the mile • and a quarter in 2:00;, with 122 pounds up. Taken back to Santa Anita he was beaten in a fast-run i mile for a purse by Stanley Fay, no doubt because he had been indulged a bit after his success in i the Derby. This race took place March 3. Four • days later he won the Los Angeles Derby from i start to finish with all ease, and was at once I shipped to New Orleans to essay the capture of both of the Derbys there, one-half of which mission i he has now triumphantly accomplished.
