FAST TIME AT CITY PARK. GREEK SEAL SHOWS GREAT SPEED, BUT JOHN CARROLL NIPS HIM OUT. * Gloriole Manages to Win at Last — Resectable Tajtes the Steeplechase — Bellwethers Surprising Race— Jack Witt in a Canter. New Orleans. La.. March 17. — Spirited finishes and several conspicuous form reversals characterized todays s|K rt. The handicap in which Green Seal and John Carroll fought it out for lirst place, with the Corrigan representative winning in the last stride, was a thriH.-r and caused the big throng keen enjoyment. In the early running Green Seal had set a heart-breaking pace which had his early opponents driving hard to keep within striking distance of him. At the last furlong post Green Seal appeared a certain winner and Dugan became careless when John Carroll, at this point, began making one of his characteristic rushes and. coming from a rear position, set sail after the leader, gradually gaining on him and getting up in the last stride. In the sprint race which followed. Bellwether sot the gossips to complaining when he showed astounding improvement by winning easily, defeating some of the best sprinters at the course. The judges immediately began an investigation of his inconsistent running and his trainer was at a loss to account for his sudden good form. The officials later dropped the investigation on information that owner Mathews had arranged to ship his entire string tonight to Washington, 1 . C. The steepleHuise over the short course went to the suddenly improved Rejectable. which won in a hard drive over Lindale. Buckman. which finished third, was the early leader by a wide margin, but when approaching the last two obstacles he tired badly. Jack Witt again demonstrated that he is almvc the average by the easy manner in which he disposed of his opponents in the closing race. Water Cooler, under skillful riding, got up in the last stride to win the sixth race. Iady Almy. which finished second, might have won with a stronger rider. The opening rare went to the MeCormick disap-* point mi nt. Gloriole. Th ■ sister to Glorifier was clearly best of the band that started and won with much in reserve. E. Corrigaus L"rinier upset a good thing when he finished in front of Wausau in the third race. S. C. Hildreth sent a telegram today to trainer Dave Leary to restrain jockey K. Dugan from accepting any more mounts until after the running of the City Park Derby, in which Dugan will have the mount on Meelick. Hildreths action is the remit of fear that the rider might meet with a mishap and deprive him of his services. Jockey C. Koern«r, who was suspended by starter Cassidy last Saturday for ten days, will lie allowed to ride in stake engagements for Edward Corrigan during his period of suspension. I II. Clark has purchased the two-year-old. Bird of Prey. M. L. Britton will ship tonight to Benning the horses Mufti, The Shaughraun, Prowler and a two-year-old.
