MAY EXTEND SANTA ANITA PARK RACING. Pacific Jockey Club President to Confer with Track Officials — Bad Spill in Fifth Race. Los Angeles, Cal., March 17. — What momentarily looked like a fatal accident occurred today in the running of the fifth race, when Associate suddenly fell on the stretch turn with jockey C. Ross. Both rider and horse lay motionless for at least a minute and then both scrambled to their feet unhurt. The accident ruined the winning chances of Merliugo, which was running close to Associate at the time and Shilling had to pull up. President Thomas H. Williams of the Pacific Jockey Club is expected here in a day or two and it is now rumored that the announced closing of the meeting on the scheduled date will be reconsidered and an ext nsion of two weeks agreed upon. The officials at present are reticent in regard to the matter. Hampass. off to a flying start in the second race, showed brilliant speed and won eased to a canter. Korcgnard and Right Sort ran as a team for three furlongs, where the latter tired badly. E. J. Baldwins old stallion, Cruzados, was much the best of the nine which went to the post in the third race, and was never seriously threatened. W. A. McKinneys Senator Barretl. with Shilling in the saddle, was a big disappointment to those who regarded him as one of the best speculations of the afternoon. Senator Barrett broke fast from the inside rail, hut tired badly after going a furlong. Hidden Hand proved the winner, with E. M. Fry and Boogcr Bed in second and third places. John Shields today sold Kuscimo to G. Denting [ for 50 and Diamond to J. Kraus for 50. Joseph Blume, the big field operator on the New York tracks, will leave for Washington tomorrow night to Ik- present at the Benning meeting. M. ClanrywiH leave for New York next Friday. He is in |MH r health. The card was well balanced throughout and was productive of a good days sport. The twenty-five books did a big days business and broke about even in the speculation.
