THE FAST APPROACHING SARATOGA MEETING Racing at Brighton Beach will continue through the present week and the first three days of next week Then the scene of operations will be shifted to Saratoga where on Thursday afternoon the Flash Stakes for twoyearolds and the Saratoga Handicap will be run off together with the usual supplement of purses Presumably the difficulty with which those who wish to speculate on the out ¬ come of the races are confronted at Brighton Beach will bu as evident at Saratoga although the local authorities may not be so strenuous as those of Brooklyn BrooklynAs As compared with former years the Saratoga meeting will be less in number of days and the money distributed will not be of so great an aggre ¬ gate A number of the stake races have been de ¬ clared off and stakes of smaller values have been substituted for some But quite an array of events have been retained at their former values and some rich events remain to be contested by the best horses of the time The Flash Stakes is still of the guar ¬ anteed value of 6000 The United States Hotel Stakes for twoyearolds the Splnaway Stakes for twoyearold fillies the Alabama Stakes for three yearold fillies the famous Saratoga Special for two yearolds the Travers Stakes for threeyearolds the Grand Unioil Hotel Stakes for twoyearolds and the Hopeful Stakes for twoyearolds remain of un diminished values Except the Hopeful Stakes and the Saratoga Special all of these events are of the guaranteed value order with heavy entry lists and the fees accruing are sufficient to nearly defray their cost to the Saratoga Association The Special costs the Association nothing but the 2000 in gold plate added addedThe The prospects are that allowing fully for all drawbacks the meeting will score a success The formidable stables of James R Keene John K Madden Harry P Whitney and John Sanford have been at the track for some time Except on the last day of the meeting there will be no conflict with any metropolitan track The people who go to Saratoga to attend the races are those to whom the 3 admission Is of no consequence All of the best horses now at Brighton Beach and many of the choicest of the western and Canadianowned will be there to take part iu the mimic warfare of the track trackThe The Sanford Morses are always a new element to be reckoned with at Saratoga This year thosp ready at the track number over twenty of which the majority are twoyearolds The star of the stable is the very fast filly Vails Avhich last year started In five races there won three and was second In the other two Her winnings were a purse the Delaware Handicap and the Sarauac Handicap In her defeats she ran second to Ben Ban at three quarters of a mile iu 111 and to Dandelion in the Champlaiu Handicap at a mile and an eighth in 1521 Being now a fouryearold it Is quite likely she will prove fully as good as was Sanfords other noted mare Molly Brant a few years back backThe The stakes to be decided in the course of the meeting the order of their running and their values are areJuly July 30 Flash Stakes twoyearolds 6000 guar ¬ anteed 5 12 furlongs furlongsJuly July 30 Saratoga Cup threeyearolds and over 1500 guaranteed 1 14 miles milesAugust August 1 United States Hotel Stakes twoyear olds 10000 guaranteed 34 mile mileAugust August 1 Catskill Handicap threeyearolds and over 1000 guaranteed 7S mile mileAugust August 5 Spiuaway Stakes twoyearold fillies 10000 guaranteed 5 12 furlongs furlongsAugust August C Alabama Stakes threeyearold fillies 5000 guaranteed 1 18 miles milesAugust August S Beverwyck Steeplechase 4yearolds and over 1200 guaranteed about 2 12 miles milesAugust August S Saratoga Special twoyearolds 2500 in plate added 34 mile mileAugust August 11 Travers Stakes threeyearolds 7500 guaranteed 1 14 miles milesAugust August 12 Grand Union Hotel Stakes twoyear olds 10000 guaranteed 34 mile August 13 Saratoga Cup threeyearolds and over 1 34 miles milesAugust August 15 Hopeful Stakes twoyearolds 5000 added 34 mile mileAugust August 15 Merchants and Citizens Handicap threeyearolds and over 1500 guaranteed 1 310 miles
