CANADIAN DERBY CANDIDATES READY Heavy or Slow Track for the Big Contest Deemed a Certainty Buffalo N Y July 25 Tho prospect for a fast running of the Canadian Derby at the vastly Im ¬ proved Fort Eric course on the opening of the sum ¬ mer season Monday went glimmering today when the track was in such condition that onb the most venturesome of trainers were willing to send their charges put for even mild gallops The official en ¬ tries announced toelay show a elecieleelly smart field for the Derby and there is a strong probability that the six threeyearolds named will go to the post the only doubtful one being Keep Moving which is generally considered inferior to tin others Fred Cooks Lawrence P Daley looms up as the prob ¬ able favorite taking the post of honor from PInkola which has all along been referreel to as the most likely first choice choiceLawrence Lawrence P Daley arrived here yesterday In fine condition after having been given his final preparation at Windsor It is In the matter of preparation more than anything else that Cooks colt has the advantage of Pinkola The latter has been here for about two weeks but his trainer was able to give him real work only once and that after taking him e ver to the Kenilworth track where the superintendent had partially prepared the track fe r the trial Uncle Toby and Clell Turney are counted certain starters and the former Is likely to come in for a lilieral following from the Canadi ¬ ans who remember his victory In the Derby at Hamilton a few we eks age At best the Derby will be a slowly run race and because of the condi ¬ tion of the track the list of entries for the opening day did not reach the standard expected for the meeting meetingThe The management expects to accommodate about forty Imokmakers at the opening and with the cer ¬ tainty e f a very great patronage there is reason to believe that the Fort Erie meeting will out ¬ rank the remarkable one that ended at Windsor
