DICK AVELLES HALFBROTHER DISAPPOINTS Security the erratic but speedy halfbrother to Dick Welles hardly met the high expectations of his future career that led Sam Hildreth to give 8500 for him when as a yearling he was sold at Sheepshead Bay September 2 1904 Still he was not exactly a failure His winning the Great Trial Stakes at Sheepshead Bay when a twoyearold brtuight in 19550 and alone was sufficient to jus ¬ tify the price paid for him There has never been any doubt as to the speed of Security Time and time again he amply demonstrated that he could ruii fast enough to satisfy any owner But from the outset of his twoyearold career he was a bolter and by this disagreeable habit lost races that he would otherwise have won and besides was given to sulking at times Measurably he has sobered down and last winter at Oakland and this summer at Seattle has ranked high among the sprinters on the coast At Seattle recentlv he failed at a mile but that may have been more a matter of training than inability to stay the route When a threeyearold he ran well at a mile and Hildreth had suiuVient eonlidence in him as a stayer to start him In the Brooklyn Ilandieap His record is as follows Year Age Sts 1st 2d d Ullp AVon 1905 2 0 2 4 20850 20850wo wo 12 4 2 i r nri 1907 4 14 7502 4820 1908 5 12 7 i i y 2oo
