STANLEY FAY IS A DERBY WINNER Seattle Wash July 25 The greatest throng in the history of local racing saw William Walkers crack colt Stanley Fay win the Seattle Derby t The Meadows today in race horse fashion The race was run and won in a manner that brought the 10000 lovers of the smort in attendance to a high pitch of excitement and the enthusiasm that greeted tho winner when invested with the lloral horseshoe provided for the victor was without parallel locally Besides being record breaking numerically the gath ¬ ering was brilliant and representative of the best citizens of this section the proportion of ladies present being particularly impressive and the occa ¬ sion was eloquent of the strong hold that racing has obtained here hereThe The Derby field was confined to the four candi ¬ dates named overnight Stanley Fay Boggs Glorio and Early Tide The bookmakers were bombarded when they posted 3 to 5 against Stanley Fay at the opening of betting and his odds were quickly forced down by successive stages to 9 to 20 Lively sup ¬ port developed for Early Tide the outsider but there was comparatively little for the other two starters The contest was decided without the sus ¬ picion of a fluke and each of the four contestants had every opportunity to do his best Glorio went right to the front after the rise of the barrier and opening a gap of several lengths in the first quarter and cut out the fast pace for nearly a mile before succumbing to Stanley Fay which had been follow ¬ ing closelyGlorio him most closely Glorio did not yield without a struggle and not until in the final furlong did he falter appreciably leaving Stanley Fay to fight it out witli Early Tide which made a game but futile challenge when Glorio tired Although gaining with every stride throughout the final sixteenth Early Tide failed to gut up bv a half length and tho 2250 first money was Stanley Fays Glorio barely outstayed Boggs for third money Favorites moneyFavorites won four races and a big crowd went home hapny Twentyseven bookmakers had all the business they were tiblo to handle handleConsiderable Considerable friction was aroused over an evident error of the judges in awarding third place to Cosset in the twoyearold race Achieve was un ¬ questionably third at the wire but was overlooked and the judges stood by their original decision although waited upon by a delegation of Ixxikmak ers to whom the error proved costly Cflrroll Reid and W J Young arrived today from Latonia with their horscs
