OPENING DAY AT LATONIA. BOOKMAKERS FURNISH THE BETTING IN DEFIANCE OF STATE RACING COMMISSION. Attendance and Racinpr Good Old Honesty Wins the Teaturc Race Friend Harry Shows" His . J High Class Again. Cincinnati. O.. October 39. The Latonia Jockey Club legan its fall meeting today with bookmakers in line in defiance of tlio State Racing Commissions resolution that no other system of betting than the mutuels and auction pools shall he allowed at any of the tracks under their jurisdiction. Despite this being Monday, generally considered an off day in a racing -way, the largest attendance, excepting the Vourth of July crowd, on any track in the state of Kentucky this season was on hand. The sudden change of i.dans from the announced intention of having the bookmakers operate with the big slates to tho small slates, caused a decrease in the ox petted numlKT of layers, only thirteen. Including the two fielders, drawing in. It is expected that more liookmakers will draw in tomorrow. No show of hostility from the racing commission was made this afternoon. Colonel Jack Chinu. chairman of tins racing commission, who was appointed steward for this meeting, failed io .arrive on account of having missed train connections. Secretary Rouse of the racing commission, however, sent telegrams to the variims members of the commission that a meeting Will be held tomorrow at Lexington, presumably to take action regarding Latonias failure to complv ith the commissions edict against the bookmakers. It is unlikely that a quorum will be in attendance at the meeting, as it is said that Messrs. Clsiv and ouiig are sick and that Charles F. Grainger has other pressing business matters on hand that will prevent his trip to Lexington. Todays card was riddled by withdrawals, brought about mainly through the failure of a number of the carded starters to arrive here in time. The sport, however, was excellent and fast time was recorded in most of the races. The mile and a sixteenth race, in which Old Honesty. Lady Martha and Ilanbridge were the starters, was the chief feature and it resulted in a victory for Old Honesty, which was clearly best, over Lady .Martha. Tho opening dash, for two-year-olds, went to Barney Schreibers Dr. liolzberg in easy style after lt.nl allowed Arionotto to set a fast ikico for a W ;.;ili The disappointments in the race were Uliz.l-lxtli llarwood and Phi me. loth of which failed io ijet in the money. Friend Harry again demonstrated that he is a crack youngster by his impressive victory over T. M. Green and other two-year-olds, at six furlongs. T. M. Green, making his first start since the Lexington meeting, showed a high order of speed for a Jialf. but was easily overhauled by Friend Harrv when his" rider put him to the test. Buttons, which began slowly, came with a belated rush that landed second place for him in advance of T. M. Green. Marbles and Honest raced each other into exhaustion during the first half of the third race, which enabled Topsy Robinson, recently claimed bv Nugent Bros., to come away an easy winner. After licr victory her former owner bid her tip $."00 over lier entered price of . hut failed to get her. Nugent Bros, also scored with their Arrow- Swift in tho closing race, and had to stand a like run-up from the same source to retain the horse. The betting angle on this race had a queer aspect, and in view of the fact that Moreland put up a weird ride on Belmere. the favorite, the judges had the rider in tilie stand for an explanation. Later they also sent lor Belmeres owner, but nothing developed and the matter was dismissed. Hostile Hyphens defeat by Severus was unexpected. The former was a pronounced favorite. Robert Cooper, from T. 1. Hayes stable, would have been a dangerous factor in the race but for going lame at a critical time. It is unlikely that he will -again be n starter this season. O. T. Henshall arrived this morning from New York with jockey Gamer, who will ride here for the remainder of the racing season liefore going to California. Mr. Henshall predicts Chanlers election for governor of the state of New York by about 150,000 majority. Dick Roller, which arrived here from New York ailing, showed improvement tills morning and his temperature lias been reduced to 102.
