NOTES OF THE TURF. Barney Schreiber will have about sixty horses in training at the two California tracks. Fred T. Woods Sensible and Hands Around have earned about ,400 for their owner during the first week of the Dallas meeting. Handlcanper Martin Nathanson has prepared the program for the first week of racing of the Oakland meeting and the book will be ready for dlstri bution several days in advance of the opening. Elida, one of the Marchmont Stables string, has been brought to the Oakland track from a nearby ranch where she had been turned out. The others of the string will arrive from Oregon in the near future. The horses of G. B. Saportas. who races under the name of the Bonnie Brook Stable, which will be shipped to France on November !, include Alfar. Simon Pure. Chaseaway and Fort Johnson, besides a number of untried jumpers. William Shields has established himself on a farm in Delaware County. Pennsylvania, where he will winter a large number of horses intended for early racing next year. Shields does not expect to see any of the racing on the coast this winter. On the opening day of the Jamaica meeting, a number of Italian naval officers were present to see Queen Marguerite, owned by one of their countrymen, run in the chief race of the day, but were disappointed in seeing the filly run outside of the money. William Cahills big twoyear-old. Captain John, became so nervous at Seattle that Cahill is resorting to the expedient of training him witli a pony. This method is producing the desired results, the colt having steadied down quite a bit since his arrival at Oakland. Tommy Burns has arranged to lease his cottage at Sheepshead Bay and spend the winter in New Orleans if racing is resumed there. It is not improbable that Burns may be seen in the saddle again, as he has not taken on weight and can ride at 105 pounds without difficulty. Ballet Girl, the filly that ran second to Michael Beck in the two-year-old maiden race at Baltimore the other day. is closely related to J. R. Keenes Ballot, now on his way to England. St. Leonard, the sire of Ballet Girl, and Voter, the sire of Ballot, are both descended from the great English stallion. Hermit, while Cerito is the mother of both animals.
