NOTES OF THE TURF. P. S. Roberts, former owner of Rough Rider, Is organizing a stable in the east for a campaign at Santa Anita Park. Jockey Buxton is not able to do less than 100 pounds now and will probably ride at above that figure during the winter. Jockey J. Butler, who will ride for C. R. Ellison on the coast during the winter, passed through Chicago yesterday on his way to San Francisco. R. J., hotter known as "Dick" Doggett, who disposed of his racing stable during the summer, is now engaged in the taxicab business in New York. Johnny Walters, formerly the best-known clubhouse commissioner on the New York tracks. Is seriously thinking of going to California and trying bis hand at "laying prices." Jack Keene has arrived at St. Petersburg from Japan and will shortly proceed to Warsaw, where he expects to obtain an opening as trainer for one of the big Russian stables. C. Russell, O. A. Bianchls apprentice rider, has failed to make a good impression on the racegoers at Oakland, his rides on Military Man and Remember displaying little ability. Sewells troublesome ankles appear to Improve vith each succeeding race and trainer Miller, of the El Nido Stable, now entertains hope that the horse will stand a long winter campaign. According to Los Angeles dispatches, R. F. Carman, the New York horse owner, can be seen nearly every morning at an early hour putting his horses through their paces at Santa Anita Park. The Business Mens League of Hot Springs has appointed a committee to draft a bill for an amendment re-establishing racing there under certain conditions, to be presented to the coming legislature. John A. Mallon. which C. Buxton of the Flenr de Lis Stable has taken in hand to train, is a full-brother to Eyebright. the Opening Handicap winner. Mallon appears to be simply a sprinter, however. G. Relf, a Tennessee brewer for whom Carroll Reid is training a string of horses at Santa Anita, has been a constant visitor at Oakland and will remain there until the opening at Santa Anita Park. Starter Dwyer, now officiating at Oakland, has established a schooling list for unruly horses at the coast track. Emma G.. Meddling Hannah. Bishop W.. Captain John ami The Mist are the horses comprising it up to date. H. G. Bedwell. who recently bought the contract on jockey Taplin, was very much pleased at the ride the boy gave Wap the other day at Oakland. Taplin rode his maiden wiuuer at the recent Anaconda meeting and appears very promising. Jockey W. H. Woods, whose home is at Dayton, Ohio, and who disappeared last winter from the Algiers course at New Orleans, has been located at Los Angeles, where he is in charge of a stable of racers belonging to an Anaconda mine owner. Piquet, belonging to Moore and Walters of Callfor- nla. fell and broke his foreleg in a race at Salt Lake City last week. The horse was Immediately destroyed.
