SOLITAIRE II. A PROMISING SIRE. Solitaire IL. the stallion that A. B. Spieckels imported to California from England several years ago. has sired eleven winning two-year-olds of IOCS. This showing is considered remarkable for the reason that his opportunities have been limited, he never having been bred to an outside mare. Solitaire II. is a grandly -bred horse, being by Ayrshire, wiuner of the Epsom Derby and Two Thousand Guineas, and sire of Airs and Graces, winner of the English Oaks. On his sires side he is of close kin to Merrv Hampton, winner of the Derby and innumerable stakes on the British turf. Solitaire II.s dam was Salisky. by Thunder, out of Utopia, by Rataplan, brother of Stockwell and sire of the Kpsoni Derby winner. Kettledrum. Bidden by Lester Belff. Solitaire II. himself won the Champion Stakes at Newmarket, one and three-quarter miles, and the Sold Vase at Ascot. During his racing career he competed successfully with all of the best English horses of his day. including Dieudonne. Captain Martin. Sweet Marjory, Goblet. Revoke. Torhalton. Labrador. Champ de Mars and others whose achievements entitled them to consideration as high-class horses. Cotytto, the filly that has been running so brilliantly at Oakland since the opening of the season there, is the star of the Solitaire II. two-year-old get. although, Torbeliino, a stake winner, and Car-misa are- fast youngsters. The latter holds the American record. 40J, for three and a half furlongs.
