STRIKE OUT FAILS BADLY. SWIFT NON-STAYER STRONGLY PLUNGED ON, BUT IS NEVER PROMINENT. St. Francis the Only Winning Favorite Bon Homme Defeats Torbellino Tony Faust Beaten by Import. r San Francisco. Cal.. December 15. Iiis Tim Sulli-t.hi. of New York, had wo starters. Yankee Daughter and Trois Temi. in the fifth and sixth laces respectively at Oakland todav. The last-liaincd was the intended medium of a killing which did not materialize, although the horse won easily enough. A delegation of horsemen, iuclnding Matt ICeis. actually came up from Los Angeles for the express purpose of playing Trois Temp, hut were deterred from so doing because of a huge, hut misguided plunge on Strike Out which unexpectedly developed. From the outset Duryeas cast-oiT was the storm center of speculation and the supply of money in his support seemingly inexhaustible at the close. Wagers in such prolusion were offered that the majority of the layers suspended business on the notorious counterfeit. In the running .Strike Out failed to display a particle of his usual earlv speed, being hopelessly beaten from the start. This was considered very remarkable in view of his nearly successful effort to run away with jockey Gilbert while at the post. Sullivans Trois Temp, however, made good like a real race horse, drawing out in the lirst stride and winning all the way under Walter Millers alert and vigorous riding. Strike Outs defeat was the crowning public disaster in a speculative why during the afternoon, the losses of the plunging contingent being extraordinarily heavy. Kllison lias announced that he will not ride .7. Butler on any of his horses and that the recently engaged jockey would lie released forthwith. For an off-day the card was surprisingly varied and attractive, containing many entries of good Iiorses. Bon Homme won tin second of the overnight features, defeating Torlellino. a heavilv baeked favorite. The running of the Reber Handicap also resulted in the downfall of a prominent public choice. Tony Faust, another oft-time short-priced horse in the betting succuniled to Import. The; afternoons sport began encouragingly with a victory for St. Francis, but lie proved the sole winning public choice on the program. The fifth race whs marked by lack of interest in every way, every one waiting, it seemed, to recoup on the last. Kinil Herz arrived from the east yesterday. It is reported that F. I. Weir will race at Santa Anita, taking his departure at the end of this week. Jockey .1. Reiff was also among todays newcomers from the east. Rcttig lias been set down by his employer. "Butch" Fisher.
