In encompassing the defeat of the latter he created a new track record for the distance of 1:51. ami clipped two-fifths of a second from the track record. Dominus Arvi was at his best, displaying great speed to the head of the stretch, but here Montgomery, never far from the leader, gradually closed upon him. shook him off easily and won going away fast. The Hildreth horse was always held the favorite in the betting. it. F. Carman scored again, tlris time the long overdue Fleming liearing his colors to victory. He was pitted against a fair 1aud of sprinters in the third race, at six furlongs, and after running on the outside all the way. shot out of the ruck with a rush when an eighth out. winning as Ids rider pleased. A few shrewd form players won handsomely over his viotory. especially ex-bookmaker J. McManir. whose commissions were largely instrumental in causing his price to dwindle from 4 to 55 to 1. The most noticeable feature of the afternoons sport was th astonishingly large crowd, which almost vied in proportions with that of a Saturdays attendance. Starter Holtniau was in no way to blame for the poor send-off of Magazine in the fourth race. The colt propped when the barrier went up and by the time he had got into his stride he was at "least twenty lengths back of the others. Magazine will not lie allowed to go to the post hereafter until he is thoroughly schooled to the barrier. The lietting was1 unusually heavy, with the books and public breaking about even.
