GROWING LIVELY AT LOUISVILLE. Wintergreens Fast Work at Memphis Makes Him Favorite for the Kentucky Derbv, Louisville. Ky.. April ."..Wintergreen, a bay colt by Hick Welles — Winter, and owned bv Rome Res-peaa. is. at this time, top choice in the future liook on the Kentueky Derby, to lie run May 3. Wariield. a chestnut coll. by Nasturtium Detection, owned by W. .1. Young, is second choice, and T. M. Green, a brown gelding by G. W. Johnson--Evergreen, and belonging to "Uncle Davy" Prewltt. is third choice. While Kespess. Young and Prewitt are each hope fill that they will send to the post the winner of Kentuckys big race, there are. at present, twenty-two other earners who feel that they. too. have more than a chance to w"in he race and the accompanying honor and glon. Prices quoled locally are: Horse. Wt. Odds. Wintergreen 117 4-1 Wartield 117 5 1 T. la. Wartield had been accorded chief distinction in this connection until the watchers caught Wintergreen working a mile over the Montgomery Park course in better time than that made by Wariield — 1:44. He went the distance handily and was pulling up at tin- end. showing that it was possible for him to have cut otf at least two seconds without great effort. Respess. according to reports, was himself surprised over the performance, although he has contended all along thai he bad a colt of exceptional class in Wintergreen. Respess stable will arrive next Tuesday at Churchill Downs. Because of the superior condition of that course be will be able to traiu to better advantage ami the chances are that Wintergreen will show more speed there for the reason that the course is not so sandy. Private advh es from Montgomery Park are to the fleet that Youngs Derby eligibles. Wartield and Direct, are training on in splendid style and that Wartield is able to cover a mile there iu 1:43. Direct has not shown the speed of his stable companion, but Young has not by any means lost faith in the colts ability to do much better. All of Youngs horses will be at the Downs by next Tuesday, iierbaps before. Jake Grtenbergs Derby horse, Louis Greenberg. by Fabulous--Mbs Mickens. is a good looker, powerfully built and has worked a mile in 1:40. From Lexington news comes that J. C. Milams Ada Meade, which is eligible to both the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, worked five-eighths in a fraction less than 1:08. Milam does not hesitate to say that Ills filly may win the big race. J. N*. Camden. Jr.. president of the Kentucky Association, has a Derby eligible in Miami, by Count Sehomberg -Roche lie 11.. which has gone five-eighths m l:0.ij without any exertion. This one seems to be improving right along. One of the best stables to be raced at Churchill Downs is thai owned by L. A, Cella. The list includes Arionette. Marse Abe. Sea Swell. Rustle. Hyiierion. Tod, Miss Strome, All Red. Von Bnelow. Console. Broadside. Irrigator. Menthor. La Souer and Conville. Lon Jones has this band in charge ami began preparing the horses months ago at Douglas Park iu anticipation of a spring meeting at Hot Springs. Had racing opened at the Springs, the Cella stable would have cut a big figure. Johnson is working hard with his charges now. Arionette looks good. Marse Abe is working quarters in 24 seconds. Sea Swell is good again. He is a compact piece of machinery, fast for three-quarters, but cannot go much beyond that distance. Last year Sea Swell ran a rattling race with Wintergreen. being beaten by the narrowest of margins. Hyperion is going halves in 52 seconds. All Red has spread out. Rustle is a good little mare ami has gone three-quarters in 1:17. Tod is recovering from sickness and will not be raced until June. Von Buelow is wind-touched and is not held in high regard. Console is a Sir Dixon and is fair. Broadside was bought for ,500 at a sale iu New York ami is a maiden. He is bad-footed. like Beau Bruminel ami Lena. The star of the Cella outfit is Menthor. which has every appearance of being a 0,000 horse. lie stands sixteen hands, weighs 1.080 pounds and is a chestnut in color. He fell lame in New York while being trained last season. From this, he lias entirely recovered. Secretary Lvinan 11. Davis of the New Louisville Jockey Ctna has been swamped during the week with requests for stable room. Applications have been received from California. Hew York. Canada ami New Orleans. Scores of racers will be brought here from the coast. Among the first arrivals will be the racers owned by W. E. Applegate. Charles R. Elli son. Barney Schreiber. George Holle. Pat Dunne ami Fr.-d Cook. Pat Civill, who was among he first to go to New Orleans for the winter racing season and who was the last owner to leave there, brought his stable to Churchill Downs on Thursday. He has Heine. Topsy Robinson. Lady Esther and Arrow Swift. Trainer Hurley will have charge of the racers of E. R. Bradley at Churchill Downs. He reports Bad News to lie in royal condition. He also has Black Mary and Blacksheep. On Wednesday loO youngsters were introduced to the starting machine and this will be the daily program until the meeting opens. Jockey Arthur Pickens left Thursday night for San Antonio. Texas, where he will title for O. G. Thomas, the Texas ranch owner and millionaire. Pickens rode Stone Street, the Kentucky Derby winner, last year. W. II. Flzers stable came in from Nashville in good condition. Fizer expects to win the Derbv with McAndrews. The son of Scintillaut II. —The Lath eoyered a mile at the Downs in 1:43.
