NEWMARKET RACING IS DECEPTIVE. New York. May 4. — The Herald correspondent ealdes from Lomh.n: "As showing how much the racing results at Newmarket Saturdav were in favor of the bookmakers, it may be nientioi ed that an investment of played up on five of the six winners would have netted a million dollars. "There was no betting on the Derby, but the Chester Cup. which h one of the principal events to be decided next week, was mentioned. For this Santo Strata, a four-year-old. trained hv John Wat-~ n at Newmarket, which. I am told, is a certain winner. was well supported at 9 to 2. "Sam Darlings stable expects to have something t.. do with the finish of this race, however, for they are heavily backing Lady de Bathes Yentoi. which ran away with last years Cesarewitch. and are taking ii to 1 every time it is offered. "Just now it is rumored that Louis Winans is likelv to purchase the smart three-* ear-old. Don Juan, from Halliek. the trainer, for the purpose of assisting in winding up Sir Martins Derby preparation. This animal has now won four races off the reel and would be able to give Sir Martins connections a good idea as to the son of Ogdens amajreta far winning the great event."
