CLOSE FINISHES AT OLD FIMLIC0. Beau Chilton Wins Like a Good One— Smoker Furnishes a Surprise — Some Bad Riding. Baltimore. Md.. May 4. — An ordinary card furnished some excellent racing at Plmlico this afternoon. Four of the races resulted in keen contests, in which the winners were under furious drives to heat their competitors out by small margins. In two of tin- faces heads separated the first two. while in two other races a scant half-length separated the winner from the second horse. Three favorites managed to reward their backers. Tlie successful choices were Beau Chilton. Ked River and Touch wood. Beau Chilton is the two-year old that the Wal-dens have entered in several important English three-year-old stakes. He ran an impressive race today, leading his opponents from end to end. ami winning witli speed in reserve by a couple of lengtns from Bedminster. Several of the jockeys furnished bad-looking rides during tlie afternoon. In the opening race Liebert pulled up Fanntleroy wihen the start came and trailed along in the rear all the way. Haywards exhibition on The Wrestler in the second race was little better. He Iliad this horse under restraint from start to finish and kept him on tlie outside of the track for tlie entire trip. These two perform ances were noted by some of the close observers, who will benefit by it on some future occasion. Young Ileverich was in good form. He won the second and third races with Takahlra and St. Jeanne. A "killing" of no mean proportions was made when Smoker captured the seventh race. This horse bad sulked in his previous races, but today he ran kind and true and. after making all the pace, lasted long enough to beat the favorite. Lad of Langden. The latter met with much interference in the race or the result might have been different. Kentucky Beau ran in the name and interests of Wood Clay tiiis afternoon. It was the first time that he had ever started as a jumper. Will Woodard was among the arrivals this morning. He got in from Lexington and will remain in the east for the remainder of the racing season. Jockey Musgrave has signed to ride for the Seagram stalde during the Toronto and Montreal meetings. Jockey Keogh will not ride here as expected. The boy telegraphed his employer. Charles Bowman, that he wuld leave California tomorrow and be on baud for the opening of the Woodbine Park meeting. Buxton, which beat the speedy Beaucoup in th.-sixth race, was a maiden up to today. W. N. Adrians bias decided to turn out Babble and Montbert. Both have trained off and they will be rested up until next fall.
