EIGHT SUBSCRIBERS TO THE ASTORIA. Gravesend Special Will Have Nominees from Most Formidable Stables This Year. New York. June 10. — The Astoria, one of the most interesting of Gravesend specials, probably will be as good a race as ever this season, it is scheduled for decision Monday. June 21. Of the original sub scribers. Senator P. H. McCarren. Philip J. Dwyer and John 1. FoIIansbee have dropjied out. but eight horsemen will make nominations and most of them will send candidates to the post. The eight subscribers are August Belmont. Harry Payne Whitney. James R. Keene. Woodford Clay. Harry K. Knapp. the Newcastle Stable, Richard T. Wilson. Jr., and Herman B. Duryea. Mr. FoIIansbee. owner of Astarita. the first Astoria winner: Mr. McCnrreii. owner of Ocean Tide, the second, and Mr. Dwyer. owner of Melissa, the latest winner, are out because they have no fillies this season. But they will he guests at the dinner at the Waldorf Astoria following the winning of the race. Mr. Belmont. Mr. Keene and Mr. Whitney are new subscribers. In years gone by they were not asked to subscribe because of the bigness of their stables. It was the desire of the promoters of the race to keep it among horsemen maintaining stables of small or mode-ate size, who had no big stock farms to draw upon for candidates. But times have changed. The big fellows are necessary to the success of the race this season, and inasmuch as many of their smartest youngsters are abroad, they will have no overwhelming advantage over the smaller owners.. Some of the Astoria nominations were made yesterday. Thomas Welsh, on behalf of the Newcastle Stable, named Popov CT, a daughter of Handspring and Flirtineer and a half sister to Spooner. As agent of the Whitney stable, lie nominated Jreenvale. a daughter of Hamburg and a winner at Belmont Park. Woodford Clay named Ocean Hound, a daughter of Star Shoot and Flying Ship and winner of the Criterion, also an untried miss called Flying Footsteps. Flving Footsteps is a daughter of Ben Strotne and Flying Cold Dust. William Karrick named Calypte and Coonskin for Harry K. Knapp. and Thomas Healey named Mex-oana and Projectile for Mr. Wilson. Mexoana is a consistent winner and Calypte can run fast for a little way. Projectile and Coonskin arc unknown quantities. Presumably the Keene nominations will be Svsonbs half sister. Degree, and Flashing. The Belmont entry will likely be Sou. a sister to Half Sovereign and a winner at Pimlico. and the Duryea nominations will In- Curdv and Zuna. two good-looking daughters of Irish Lad.
