i I CHIEF HAYES BREAKS MONTREAL RECORD. Shows Sudden Improvement That Arouses Gossip-Steeplechase Race a Farce. Montreal. Juo.. June 10. — The Prince of Wales Handicap, a steeplechase stake which called for a jourmy over the full course, and a handicap fiat race at seven furlongs, were provided for attractions at Blue Bonnets this afternoon. liood fields went to tin- post in both events. The Colt stable furnished the winner of the former in Kara, while Chief Hayes, a horse that did not run to his best form in his previous effort, made an exhibition of his field in the handicap on the fiat and incidentally established a new track record for the distance when hi- covered the seven furlongs in 1:20. Naturally Chief Hayes victory, coming as it did on top of his poor showing in his previous effort at Toronto, furnished food for gossip. That his victory was anticipated in some quarters was shown by the betting. the horse having been backed from a high price of s lo 1 down to 4 to 1. He dashed to the front when the barrier was lifted and. showing dazzling s|ieod throughout, was never headed. The pace was fast from start to finish, the fractional time la-ing 2::i . *T§. 1:13| and 1:20. The handicap steeplechase was little better than a lane. Kara, the winner, was the only one of the six starters that finished the coarse without a mis han. Kara ran coupled with Reginald as the Colt entry. The notice hoard showed that the stable had declared to win with Reginald. Palmer finally MM. died in nulling- him tip. but when he look the jump he unseated his rider ami ran away. Kara thin went on and won. In tie meantime Reginald was caughl and remounted and finished second. Wile rzhergcr. which finished third, lost his rider at the fifth jump, but was remounted and lumbered over the course in slovenly fashion. Touchwoid was the first of the field to nunc to grief. linen! to his knees after lauding at the second lump and hst his rider. F.xtiansionist. after making outturn of the field, lost Aichilr.ild and then Byzintine fell heavfly at the thirteenth fence. For a time it was thought that the latter had broken his leg. but the horse finally scrambled to his feet. The rare was worth .7H0. the winners portion of which was ,438. W. llawes. the jockey that came here from South Africa, todav filed an application for a license from the Canadian Racing Associations with Joseph Mclennan, the local representative of that organization. J. W. Dodge, former owner of A. Muskoday. arrived from California this morning with the ap--ircnticc rider. George Carroll, whom he will manage over the Canadian circuit. Steeplechase jockey W. McKinney got in from New York this morning and will ride for William Garth during the balance of the summer. Jockey Phil Goldstein was taken sick this morning and was forced to cancel his engagements for the afternoon.
