FLAIR, ENGLISH 8:750 BROODMARE. to t u o Lesbia, Her Sister, Fetches 7,250 Cooper Mares Net a Total of 52,735. ?, : II 11 to The fact that Flair sold for ,7.V In the course of the auction sale at Newmarket of the late Sir fl Daniel Coopers broodmares a day or two since, has n excited much comment on the ground that it is a record price for a mare at auction. It is. however, by no means the highest price ever paid for a thor- oughbred mare, that distinction belonging to the famous Sceptre, for which the rich English brewer, f Mr. Bass, gave Robert Sievier 25,000. It might be noted that prior to that Sievier had bought to Sceptre for $.VJ,rjO0 when she was sold as a yearling, J a record price itself for a yearling at public auction, ltaron Hirschs great race mare. La Fleche, brought li ,ir0 at the dispersal sale of the latters horses j after his death. At Newmarket. July 1 of this year, the yearling filly. Pusilla, by Gallinule Concertina, j was bought at auction by Sir Robert Jardine for t !,000, which is probably next to the price given for Sceptre as a yearling. In this country the record price at auction for a mare Is the 9,000 paid by Dwycr Bros, for the great Falsetto filly. Dew-drop, in 18S5, when rierre Lorillard sold his stable. In , but Endurance by Right was sold to the late William , C. Whitney for $:5,000 lit private sale. Flair is a young mare, having won the One Thous- I and Guineas so recently in lUOti. She was a lilly .of such speed that It was thought the Derby of that year was practically at her mercy, but shq went amiss lieforo the race and it was won by her stable companion. Spearmint. As a two-year-old she won the .".00O Imperial Produce Plate at Kempton Park and the .Middle Park Plate at Newmarket and, although her career was short, good judges held her to bo one of the most remarkable mares of modern time?... Her younger sisters. Lesbia and Vivid, also won much renown as racers. Flairs first foal, a chestnut colt by Galllmile named Porphyrlo. was sold at auction at Newmarket July 1 for 7,r.M, and if her produce continues to bring approximating returns, it may turn out that she is a cheap purchase even at such a high price as S,750. She represents the ultra fashionable blood lines of England and her pedigree is as follows: l WdPttp v euette J Voltlgeur. 1 Mrs jUd!Waj.. g i I Fly. Duchess - j Fiy.iutchman. ! The entire sale of the late Sir Daniel Coopers stud and horses In training netted 90,000 guineas 72.-fiOO. so that the executors were well advised in refusing M. E.
