ONE HORSE THAT BRANDT OVERRATED. Barney Schreiber, while he has parted company with trainer Herman Brandt, still has the utmost confidence in Brandts ability and declares that his ; former trainer may at any time take his pick of the produce of Woodlands Stud. Concerning the motives which impelled him to make a change in i trainers for Jack Atkin, the master of Woodlands i says: "Brandt is a good man with a horse, but at present he has too many horses fitted for the same ; kind of races. Jack Atkin is a sprinter, and so are . Harrlgan and Chapultepec. The other day Harrlgan and Jack Atkin started in a race and the latter ran i a disgraceful race. Out west they would have been i coupled. In the east they were separated in the . betting, and while I dont think there was anything wrong, still I dont even want the finger of suspicion ! pointed my way. Since Haggin has cut "down his stud I am almost the biggest breeder In the country, and I cant afford to have any scandal talk ; about tlie running of my horses. "Brandt was with me twelve years and made money for me. But one time he cost me quite a 1 sum, owing to his overestimating the abilities of a i colt that I owned. This was at Buffalo, where I had 1 Jack Atkin and some others In Brandts care. I I was sitting on the stone step of the hotel when up conies Slocum. You all known Slocum. He said: : Barney, what will you take for Seymour Beutler2 "I did not know whether he was kidding or not, so I stalled and said: Why do people always want to buy my best horse?" " Give you 2,000 for him, cash, said Slocum, and before I could give him an answer he counted out twelve ,000 bills, and my eyes got big. for I needed the cash. Just to make it strong I said: Now, we had better go to the track, for I must consult Brandt, and you want to be sure that the colt is sound. So he got an automobile and we went to Kenllworth. "Brandt was there, and I took him aside and said: This fellow is going to give me 2,000 for that dog, Seymour Beutler. "And what do you think Brandt said? " Barney, you dont want to sell Seymour Beutler; hes a 0,000 horse, and Ill give you 2,000 myself. "That knocked me a-twister, and I said, Whats tho use of having 0,000 colts when they cant win a race? and then Brandt furnished a few alibis us to whv the colt had not made the showing In keeping with his supposed value. And I stood for It and told Slocum that he would have to go much higher to get the colt. Well, the year was nearly over i when Brandt came back to my farm and Seymour Beutler had failed to show that he was even a fair horse. I was pretty sore about losing that 2,000 sale, and gave my trainer a lecture. "Then Brandt made me an offer of ,500 cash and the horse Preen, which he thought was worth ,000, , and I was tickled to death to get It. Its different now with me. Years ago I would not think of selling a horse, but now anyone I have is for sale except Jack Atkin, as I want him to take bains place some day."
