NOTES OF THE TURF. Paying patronage has marked the Empire City meeting throughout. Of the first thirty races of the Empire City meeting, eighteen were won by western horses. Jockey Taplin has some talent for caricature. The boy is now 18 years of age. The daily attendance at the Victoria races has averaged aliout 2,000. Ethon reduced the Butte track record for five furlongs from 1:00 to 5Ji iu winning his-recent start. The entries of J. T. MeDermott and Co. have been ordered refused at Butte on account of inconsistent running. The Pacific Jockey Club has reinstated those stables which raced under electric lights at Ogden July 5. Barney Sclireibers Eddie Graney is looked upon as one of the best two-year-olds racing at the Victoria meeting. Ed Alveys ,000 colt Friend Harry will at once be fired and turned out. It is expected that he will stand training for fall racing. Running races on the flat and steeplechase races will be included in the speed program of the Texas State Fair at Dallas the coming fall. On Hospital Day at Victoria the purses were designated as the Accident, the Ambulance, the Doctors, the Hospital, the Nurses and the Well Again. Leo Christy has shipped eight horses to Windsor from Latonia. W. Perkins sent three along with Christy. Another carload will go from Latonia Sat unlay. Trotting races by daylight and running races by electric light was the program carried out at the annual meeting of the Western Trotting Association at Springfield, 111., yesterday. It transpires that George Reif, owner of Maltbie. won a ,000 wager when that horse finished first in the Empire City Handicap at long odds Saturday. Reif is a wealthy Chattanooga brewer who is enamoured of racing as a sport. On every hand you will hear nothing but praise for the running of the races here this summer. It surely is liorse racing, anil for all there is in the contenders. A noticeable feature is the scarcity of scratches. Nearlv every race1 is complete as to overnight entries. Butte Miner.
