DEMONSTRATION AT FORT ERIE. Crowd Disagrees with Official Decision Awarding Race to Daisy Garth. Buffalo. N. Y.. July 20. The placing of Daisy Gartli first over Lotta Creed in the sixth race at Fort Erie today brought out a strong protest from the backers of the Hawkins filly, who labored under the impression that she had gotten up iu time to beat the recently acquired McLaughlin racer. Close observers agreed with the judges. Tills incident was the only happening of an otherwise routine afternoon of racing. There was a noticeable absence of class in the various races and enthusiasm seemed correspondingly lacking. The finishes in several instances were close enough to suit the most exacting. The only race without selling conditions was the second, in which a mediocre band of two-year-old fillies started. It was won by Western Lady in a spirited finish with Whim and Mac Henley. Form players started the day auspiciously when Ozana, the favorite, took the purse in a canter from Odin, an outsider, in the opening dash. The victory of Western Lady, also a favorite, helped them considerably, but they encountered a setback in the third, when Carthage jusf did manage to get up in time. Carthages stretch run was a sensational one and he deserved the victory, as he was clearly best. Hyperion II. and Arionette, former sfablemates, bad the fourth race to themselves and Hyperion II. took the measure of the filly, which had been installed favorite. The unwieldy field of fourteen starters in the fifth race were lucky to escape without a fall, because of the frequent crowding on the narrow track. Anne McGee. which got away in a forward positlou. never left the issue iu doubt. Pert was probably best in the race, but met with frequent interference during the early stages. The ding-dong finish between Daisy Garth and Lotta Creed was a thriller and with better liandling Lotta Creed would have won. The closing dash was only a canter for the favorite. Giles. Belle Scott beat the frequently interfered with Red Hussar for second. Because of taking up Ada O. Walker sharply soon after the start the judges suspended jockey Gilbert for the remainder of .the meeting. Robert Boyle will in future train the horses of E. A. Breiman, succeeding W. McDaniel. It. L. Thomas found the game here too strenuous and has departed for the Empire City track. L. A. Cella left today for a fishing trip, but will return here before the close of the meeting. Nothing further has developed in the Investigation regarding the steeplechase races whicli brought about the warning off of jockeys Archibald and Beamish. It is almost certain that Stones temporary suspension will be made permanent.
