MEETING AT THE SPA IS PROFITABLE. R. T. Wilson, Jr., Makes That Announcement at Dinner of the Newcastle Stable, Saratoga, N. Y., August 23. At the dinner; of the Newcastle Stable at the race track yesterday, about eighty guests were entertained. R. T. John Sanford said that he thought the racing situation had cleared up wonderfully considering the heavy blows it had received. He deprecated early two-year-old racing and thought Saratoga ought to have the month of August each season for racing. Mr. Wilson said: "We are not yet out of the woods much remains to be done to perpetuate the sport." P. J. Dwyer, in whose honor a birthday dinner was given Saturday evening, paid a high tribute to James Rowe and James McLaughlin, his former trainer and jockey. "I will never forget them, nor their services to me," he said. "Their honesty was never questioned. Their loyalty will not be forgotten by men who know the temptations of the turf. 1 am proud of them. I wish Frank McCabe. who also trained for me, could have been here. With such men as Rowe, McCabe and McLaughlin serving a man, the turf would be free from attack." James Rowe made a speech, a rare thing for him. He said that while lie was glad to see bis brother trainers win races, he was forced to confess that Tie preferred to win them himself.
