BIG FIELDS AT MONTREAL WELL-FILLED RACES INCREASE -ENTHUSIABM OF BLUE BONNETS PATRONS. With Old !Honcty Badly Ridden, Plaudmoro FInda It Easy to VIn the Handicap Martin Doylo Medium of Belting Coup, - Montreal, Que.. September 8. Under improved conditions large fields contested most of the race at Rlue Rounds tills afternoon and this served to increase enthusiasm. The attendance was again large and the speculation was of gosl volume. Twenty-nine layers looked after the wants of those speculatively Inclined. A mile and an eighth handicap and a steeplechase, over the two and a iiuartcr miles course were features. Tin- first named went to Plaiidmore, the favorite. In handy fashion. The disappointment of the racing was Old Honesty, on which Guy Ranis rode, a slovenly race. Great Heavens essayed the early paccmaklng and established a lead of ten lengths In the ilrst half-mile, but tired badly In the stretch. Plaiidmore, his closest pursuer throughout, drew into tin: lead In tlie last uuartcr and only had to canter to the llnlfh. Great Heavens, under a hard drive, took second place a neck In advance of Old Honesty. The latter, with good handling, would have given the winner an argument and his showing today should not bo taken too seriously. The steeplechase furnished a good contest for most of the distance, tlie live starters alternating In the lead during dirrcrcnt periods of the running until passing the tenth Jump. Then Class Leader forged into the lead and appeared a certain winner until approaching the last hedge, where the light-weighted Dacra rushed by him to win as his rider pleased, Manzano came with a rush In the last seventy yards and took second place. There was sharp support In the race for Sunglow. but he failed to show anything to warrant It. Caloorabatchee probably ran for the last time, as he broke down hos.-lessIy after going: over the last jump. Martin Doyle, a horse that had been showing to poor advantage in his previous starts, was well meant today and was the medium of a betting coup in the closing dash. He went to the front with the rise of the barrier and was never headed. Jean-ette M.. which had been closest to him throughout, retained second place from Qnagga. After the finish II. C. Redwell bid Martin Doyle up from, art entered price of 1909.sh00 to ,000. but failed to get him. In retaliation for the bidding. Amos Tnrnev claimed Tlie Wrestler from II. O. Redwell for ,155. Redwell then claimed Jeanette M. for S1.255. Chief Kee. which ran a promising race yesterday m the Huron Stakes, was entlrelv overlooked todav. hut made good decisively in the third race. Hiacko furnished a surprise in the second race by winning in a romp, with long odds quoted against him. Grande Dame took second place after a well-sustained stretch drive. Fourteen cheap platers went In the opener and Merry Gift proved a handy winner over Loval Maid and Woolstone. Jockey Ganz was fined S25 bv the stewards for cutting across the field soon after the start In thj closing race while astride Martin Dovle. Economy, owned by J. W. Colt, broke down this morning and will be returned to the .farm at Gen-eseo. X. Y. A. G. Weston returned today from New York, where he went to attend the yearling sales. He reports that the meeting at Sheepshead Rav Is almost on a par with those he had attended there in former years.
