DOMINION TO SHIMONESE VALLEY FARM STABLES CANDIDATE TAKES HANDICAP AT WOODBINE. Daughter of Futurity Winner, Martimas, and Kings Plate Winner, Lyddite, Shows Smart Form Another Brilliant Gathering. Toronto. Ont.. September 20. Another brilliant gathering turned out at AAoodbine this afternoon. The clubhouse contingent was again especially strong, and the usual brilliant social gatherings took place between the running of the races. The Ontario Jockey Club meetings are looked upon as big social functions in Ontario, and many prominent families in the province make it a point to be present in Toronto during the races. A splendid program was offered this afternoon. The Dominion -Handicap, which called for horses foaled in Canada, and the Roysterer Steeplechase, over the two-mile course, were the features. The American-owned Pretty Miehal, racing In. tiie colors of J. AV. Colt, captured the steeplechase stake, while the Messrs. Hendrie won tiie Dominion Handicap with their good lilly. Shimonese. The latter met strong opposition and won in a eanter. Shimonese. by the Futurity winner, Martimas, out of the Kings Plate winnorr Lyddite, has shown a disposition in all of her races to. like a considerable distance of ground. She is a bit undersized, hut what she lacks in Inches is more than made up in ganieness. In todays race Taplin avoided the early pace and trailed the leaders for more than half the route. AVhen he finally made his run rounding the far turn, Shimonese responded with groat courage and entering the homestretch was on oveu terms with the leaders. In the stretch she moved up, assumed an easy lead and, drawing away at the end, won by a length under restraint. Seismic, coupled with Mill on the Floss as the Seagram entry, did not run up to expectations and at no time during the struggle was he even dangerous. Musgrave worked him out a half-mile after the finish of the race and he is evidently being pointed for a future engagement over a considerable distance of ground. The Roysterer Steeplechase proved easy for Pretty Miehal, which won as she pleased after leading her opponents from start to finish. Pretty Miehal Is a splendid fencer, hut lacks the speed displayed bv sueh jumpers as Thistledale and Sir AAooster. The Valley Farm Stable also furnished the winner In the Lambton Purse In Lady Sybil, which beat Starover half a length after n long stretclj drive. Like her stable companion. Lady Sybil came from behind and finished stoutly. The General Armstrong was an odds-on favorite in the race, but after showing in front to the stretch turn faltered and was beaten a couple of lengths for the place. The conditions of the race called for starters to be owned by Canadians, and several of those that went to the post were future Kings Plate eligibles. Among them were the Seagram pair, Jane Shore and Semele, the former a sister to Slaughter, the latter a sister to Seismic, both of which were Kings Plate winners. Jane Shore showed a lino turn of speed in the race, but was eased up after going half a mile. Semele only cantered. Both fillies tiro good lookers and, with the development that another year will bring, they should prove formidable contenders In next springs big race. The Seagram stables share of the purses came with Simcoes victory in the opener, a six-furlongs dash. Sinicoe. outrun in the early stages, closed stoutly through the stretch and won in a romp. Prince Ahmed showed a lino performance In the third race, which he won by a length in a driving finish with Stanley Fay. Prince Ahmeds victory was tiie more Impressive as he ran fullv liftv yards farther than any other horse in the race. He kept bearing out at the turns, where he went wide, but closed with a brilliant burst of speed. In the following race the Bedwell representative. The Wrestler, made a ilisapiioiuting showing, failing to show any of the sliced he possesses at any stage of the running. His performance should not be taken too seriously.
