Piute began slowly and was badly outrun for the lirst three furlongs, was then taken to the outside and gained steadily on the leaders In the last quarter into a game second. Sal Volatile was much used in racing Pajaroita into defeat in the first half ami tired at the end. Fort Johnson was messed about all the way. First Premium was pulled up at the start. The latter was in close quarters early and met wll.h some interference, made a game challenge at the furlong post, but faltered in the final drive. The General. Armstrong set the early pace, but appeared to be "climbing" all the way and swerved in behind the leaders in the stretch drive. Louis Reil went well. Jane Shore showed a good burst of speed. Stanley Fay ran under restraint for the first six furlongs and was taken to the outside on the lionp? turn, then finished fast and close -up. Jack Parker set a fast pace, but tired after going six furlongs. The other two were always distant trailers. Don Diaz went much farther than any other horse in the race, closed a big gap and finished with a great burst of speed. Fearnauglit II. quit in the last furlong. Vesar showed sliced. Canvas fenced well, but tired In the last mile. Half a Crown refused at the second jump and then unseated his rider. John G. Cavanagh fell at the first jump and Bonnie Kate bolted at the same fence.
