ALL READY AT LOUISYILLE KENTUCKYS FALL TERM OF RACING TO B5 INAUGURATED TODAY. 1 Churchill Downs to Be Scene of Meeting That V?ill Continue for Thirteen Days, with Pari Mutuels as Method of" Speculation, ! J" Louisville. Ky., September 24. Tlie tbirteen-dayn meeting which begins at Churchill Downs tomorrow will inaugurate tin; fall term of racing in Kentucky, and the indications are that the sport -will score -a signal success. For a while it was thought that -there might be. a scarcity of horses here, but recent arrivals afford ample material from which- to build some splendid cards and .furnish interesting" racing. Interest in the coming meeting is healthy and the patronage should be up to former standards. . Tin; mutuel and auction pool system of wagering, introduced here during the spring of UVftS. will again prevail. As the patrons of racing in this ciy have shown a partiality for tills, mode of betting, there will; be slight variation from the three previous meetings held under this form of betting. This fall the; management has decided to" dispense with the mu.tuels and will only install, those of the valiie. Thjere will be eight mutuel mac-hinesi in operation, three of which will lie for straight bettors, two for tlipse desiring to wager lor place and three foe slwnv betting. The racing which begins tomorrow will mark the first period of fall racing at Churchill Downs in several years. The preceding meetings were held at Douglas Park, which is situated at a considerable; distance from Churchill Downs. The management tjhought the change would meet with popular favor, as the old track has always enjoyed great prestige and has attracted the patronage of the best people In this part of the country. Since the close of the spring meeting Churchill Downs has undergone extensive improvements that give the entire plant ai a newly-built appearance. The surface of the track has likewise been changed to a noticeable extent by the cutting-up process and the fast time lecorded over the oval last spring will be lacking. Many owners welcome the changed aspect of the course, as they deem it. with its heavy cushion, safer for racing over. Last spring there were numerous cases of horses sustaining spread hbofs that were attributed to the bard track. The old staff of efficient officials who have presided for years will again be on hand. Charles F. Price Will US usual .be the presiding official and Jake Holt--man will dti the starting.. There i a conspicuous ubsence of out-of-town turf followers, but the mu-ttiels liave never been conducive to bringing strangers here and their absence is not strange. Local patronage has in the past proven ample to support the racing and there is little fear on the part of the management as to the success of the meeting. There will be. a scarcity of good riders here for the first few days, as u number who will be seen here later are still in Canada. The close of the Toronto meeting will be followed by a local intlux of riders, owners and horses from that point. I Several airloads of horses, arrived today from Latonia. In the consignments were those owned -by E. Crockett, J. Lally. F. Gering. .Sr.. A. L. Klrby. I. F. Wilson and F. B. Respess. T. Taylor, who was considered a fair rider several years back, liaa forsaken the pigskin and has branched out as an owner. He will campaign Ransack and others for the rest of the season. II. McCarren, Jr.. has been resting his-string; and lias been employing- his time superintending the breaking of ten yearlings, that he has quartered at Latonia. The youngsters are a promising lot. mostly uy Cesarion. The management will install messenger service in the grandstand for women patrons who desire to buy mutuel tickets. Jack Baker is among the recent arrivals at Churchill Downs with Jeff ISornstein, Aspirin. Alice-Baird and others of Ids string. II. McCarren and W. 1.
