SEMPROLUS TAKES THE CANARSIE. R. F. Carman and George Odom Score Doubles at Aqueduct — Another Ten-Thousand Crowd Out. Xcw- York. April 16. — R. F. Carmans Semprolus m w ■inner of the anarsie Stakes, todays A |ueduct feature for two-year-olds. The Carman colors were also successful in the other two-year-old race when Horizon won the dash for fillies. The Canarsie brought an excellent field of youngsters together ami the winner is undoubtedly a good one. The other feaiure. the Kockaway Selling Stakes, resulted in a stirring finish, in which Prince Jail, Iajaroita. Madman and Kialto finished so closely lapped that difficulty was had in placing them, and many were of the opinion that Mailman finished second. Like the Carman stable. Odom made it two for the day when at the end of the card his lillv. FoJlie Levy. duplicated the success of Prince Gal in the Hock aw iy. It is early in the season to predict good two-year-olds, but on his performance this aftcruiMin Semprolus is sure to make his way if not too ambitiously placed. He was outpaced in the early stages of the Canarsie by Frank Mullens. Babbler, the Belmont representative, and Dartworth. a Stalwart colt that iMire the colors of Janus Butler. When the real pinch came the Carman colt drew away in real racehorse fashion and achieved victory in impressive style. The tabled historv of the Canarsie Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Horizon, the other two-vear-ohl winner, is a daugh ter of Hastings ami Fond Hopes, and her most dangerous npiMim-nt was Madcap, also Nursery bred, be-, ing a daughter of Hock Sand and Lady Madge. She was the Belmont 1io|m-. but could onlv finish an in-dillerent second to the filly that had lieen sent to the yearling sales. It is |K*»sible that Bedwells Iajaroita would have beaten Prince Gal in the Kockaway had Taplin been a little less anxious. He rushed the western sprinter along at a clip that left him little for the stretch drive, and though he hung on well he was nosed out in the final stride. Three of the races went to the favorites, and there was not a winner that was not well backed, though the defeat of Madcap in the first race was something of a setback. Ardri. winner of the second by inches from Ki-ep Moving, was a first choice, and then came Semprolus. backed from 10 to S. Prince tial and Besom wife both favorites. For the second day of the season fully Kl.tOii turned out and it was an excellent days s|M»rt. though a cold wind and cloudy skies made conditions unpleasant. Among the notables present was Richard Croker.
