* — . — — .+ CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE LATOIMIA DERBY +— _ 1 The Lalonia Derby will be run Monday afternoon for the twentv eighth time so as racing goes in tin-west it is truly a t hue lion., ivd event. In its tirst four years of running it was called the Hindoo Stakes in honor of one of the grandest horses of American turf hlstorv. It Is a raee of vicissitudes and while it has been won by some of the real giants of racing, it has also fallen to some of the most ordinary of selling platers. Its tirst winner. Leonatus. was a racing jewel of the first water. As a three-vear-old he started in ten races and won them all. In succeeding years such magnificent thoroughbreds as Bersan Silver loud. Los Angeles. Kingman. Lazzaroii". Halma. Bin Brush. Ornament. Hand FOr Lieutenaut Glbaoa Hernando. Pinkola and Oiamhala carried ofr its honors. On the other hand such commoner* us Harrv New Woodlake. The Im-ciiiai and The Abbot succeeded iu gaining a place in its list of winners Los ngeles and White ran a dead heat for tirst place in 1888 and Los Angeles won the runoff. Lieutenant Gibsou -cared away all npixisition in BMKl and walked over.
