MONTREAL HAS FINE OPENING. Thomas Clydes Dalhousie Scores Impressive Victory . In the Windsor Hotel Cup Race. Montreal. Que.. June 4. — A record-breaking crowd turned out at Blue Bonnets this afternoon to witness the opening of the Montreal Jockey Clubs sprim. meeting. An excellent program was provided, the card betas made up of seven races with tlie Windsor Hotel Cup. the Inaugural Hash, a race for horses bro! iu the Province of Quebec and a steeplechase over the full learn at provided as features. The racing conditions so far as the weather was concerned could not have been improved on. It was the tirst fine day that Montreal has experienced in a month and the public took advantage of the conditions to enjoy an afternoons outing at the beautiful course back of Mount Royal. Well-balanced fields went to the peat and. as four favorites were returned winners, the public was well satisfied. The Windsor Hotel Cup. one of the handsomest trophies offered on tlie Canadian circuit, was won bv Thomas Clydes three-year-old. Ilalhousie. which showed a tine performance and scored iu a driving finish witli Daa Antonio. Chief Kee was a close third. Dalhousie was in keen pursuit of the pacemaker for the first half mile and when Theo Cook weakened rounding the Cat turn, lie graduallv worked his wav to the front and in the homestretch drew away to win by a length. Chief Kee was a keen factor at all stages and his improvement over his pn-vious effort with jockey T. Hartv in the saddle is not likely to help the latters caw. The clerk of • the s-ales was told not to weigh Hartv out todav ami the latter was forced to cancel his engagements. The province-bred race went to Colin CamplKHs Larente. a filly bv Martimas. which won in a romp troni Victoria. The latter won last rears Kings Plata here. I;-. Pillow outclassed his field in the steeplechase and won in a canter. Fincastle. however, furnished , keen opposition for the first turn of the field, but the last time around he made some mistakes and tired. The Schorr stable furnished the winner of the Inaugural Dash in John Keardon. which won in j handsome fashion, coming from behind in the home- , stretch and drawing away into an easv lead at the end. W . Walker and James McLaughlin were the hit- , est irrivals from Grareeead. Mr. Walker brou-ht , his entire stable, while Mr. McLaughlin stripped , only Ar..ndack. James Hewitt yesterday traded the sprinter. Ku- , l.b- far Joe Oaitens. and the former will carry the i c.li.rs of K. T. Dawes in the future. William P. Kiggs of Haiti -e acted as one of tin- stewards this afteraoaa. Mr. Kiugs is one of the vice-presidents of the Montreal Jockev Club.
