■■" * CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY STAKES + — 4. The Kentucky is one of the old-timers in the Saratoga stake list, having lirst been run in 1870. when it was won by the afterwards famous Harry Bassett. When fully matured and at his In-st Harry Bassett was one of the best race horses ever seen and few races ever run in this country evoked more widespread interest and excitement than his two inte.sectional contests with Longfellow in 1872. the first at Monmouth Park, which Longfellow won, and the second at Saratoga, in which Harry Bassett was victorious. For its lirst seven years the Kentucky was a mile dash for tw -y ear-olds, from which distance it was cut down to three-quarters of a mile and later on to its present five and a half furlongs route.
