NOVELTY BEATS TEXTILE HILDRETH COLT OBTAINS WINNING ADVANTAGE AT START OF ,000 MATCH. Iron Mask Wins the Grand Union Hotel Stakes for James R. Kerne — Racquet Runs Fastest Mile of the Saratoga Meeting. Saratoga. N. Y.. August 17.— S. t. Hildreths good colt. Novelty, was au easy winner over Thomas iMonalians Textile in the s|H-eial feature of the seven-race program offered by the Saratoga Association this afternoon. Weather and track conditions were well-nigh perfect and one of the largest mid-vcel- crowds of the season was in attendance. Wliile Novelty 1 eat Textile easily, the race was not a truly run one. for the reason that the winner stole an advantage of several lengths at the hreak. Shilling had Novelty in motion when the harrier was sprung and. though Textile had the inside position, tb Hildreth colt dashed to the front with such an advantage that he was aide to cross over and take that position from Textile lietore the Monahan coll fairly got going. Notter gave chase with Textile and for an instant it seemed as though he might catch Novelty, hut Shilling always had something in reserve and when Notter made his tinal move Novelty drew away again to win with ease. The Grand Inion Hotel Stakes was the regular feature of the card and it went to James It Keenes Iron Mask, witli August Belmonts Footprint and Watervale second and third respectively. The race was worth $.k.ikmi net to the winner and is one of the hig fixtures for two-year-olds.
