SOMETHING OF THE LATE DR. SMITH. Toronto, Out.. August 17. — Dr. Andrew J. Smith, who died here Monday, was chairman of the executive committee of the Ontario Jockey Club, in addition to tilling numerous other | ositions of responsibility and importance in the civic and social circles of the city. He was one of the group of gentlemen who founded the Ontario Jockey Club and there was no tuore faithful attendant at tiie meetings than he. Like tlx- late William Hendrie. lie always stood for t what is highest in the sport, his side pun osc being tue constant development of the horse. When lie came to Toronto a young man to estab lish veterinary science on a recognized basis in Ontario lie lirought with him from Scotland a real and keen love for the borne from a sporting point of view also. He had ridden and won races in his native land, and when it was proposed to form a club in this city, to eventually become the premier racing organization of Canada, and one with few equals anywhere. Dr. Smith was one of the most niihe and remained one of the most useful mem l« rs to the end of his long and honored years. Just what racing in this country owes today to Ids enthusiasm and bis wis.- foresight not many know, tint it is a great debt indeed. He owned and raced many gopd horses, among them Lady Keel, dam of the great Hamburg.
