DAY OF KEEN RACING AT HAMILTON. Exciting Finishes Mark Virtually All the Races and Arouse Great Enthusiasm. Hamilton, Out.. August 17. — The liest days racing of the Hamilton meeting was witnessed this afternoon. Secretary Iyoudon succeeded in getting together well -matched fields and in only otic instance was the margin between the first two horses at the finish more than a length. In Shre of the finishes noses and heads separated the first two. Naturally much enthusiasm ensued. In the North American Steeplechase. Expansionist, which heat Paera a nose, clipped five seconds off the track record for the distance. This race was one of the liest eoateata run through the field in Canada this year. The first two horses raced like a team throughout the last mile, with Boyle and McKinney riding like demons. Both horses fenced well and finished with good courage. Import, backed from 90 to 20 to 1. beat the odds-oa favorite Elfin Beau, a neck in the opening dash, while Robert Cooper won the mile and a half race over the turf course by a small margin over Fair Annie. William Garths Muskmelon was thought to be a good thing by the haudienppers, but Maro-mara. owned by his son. Lewis Garth, proved to be the winner. The latter came from la-hind and, finishing with good courage, won by a scant halt length. Guy Fisher, well liacked by his New York conncc tions. beat a good band of sprinters in the MM summer Handicap, which he won by a neck from rheo Cook. John W. Schorrs Woodbine just did manage t ouose out C. W. Burt in the sixth race, while Sea Swell was staggering at the finish in his race to stall off Sally Preston. Secretary Loudon was absent from the course this afternoon, having gone to Toronto to attend the aneral of the late Dr. Andrew Smith. After the betting had lieen going on for ten minutes in the seventh race Lord Nelson was excused by the stewards and fifteen minutes was allowed for new booking. Ix rd Nelson was taken sick in the paddock and was pronounced in an unfit condition to start hy the track veterinarian. There was quite a bit of rough riding during the afternoon, in which jockeys J. Wilson and Musgrave cut an important figure. Protagonist ami Rifleman both fell in their races and. according to starter Dade, Musgrave was responsible for the latter mishap. Wilson cut across in front with The Golden Bat lei fly and Osorine. Both boys were suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards. Barney Schreiber lias wired far twelve stalls at the Windsor track. He will ship ten horses from his Woodbinds Farm in Missouri next week and John Powers will probably handle them. It. J. Mackenzie and a party of trotting horse enthusiasts left for Fort Frio this morning to see Mr. Mackenzies fast mare. Merry Widow, race this afternoon. Besides racing ime of the largest sta hies of thoroughbreds on the Canadian turf Mr. Mackenzie is campaigning several trotters and pacers on Hie Grand Circuit. Joe Jones disjxised of the three horses he brought up from New York and returned to Saratoga tonight to bid on some of the horses that August Belmont will dispose of at Saratoga. Rash and Amoret were ourchased by S. A. Clopton, while Nisi was sold to C. F. Schunk. Jockey Cole had his first mount today since his accident at Latonia when he suffered a severe shaking up as a result of a fall from one of Kay Spences horses. Hartley Dewart, frainer of the Canadian racing law. was a visitor at the Hamilton course this afternoon. Alie Of pea was also on hand, and reports that a meeting will be given at Dufferin Park from September 10 to September 17, and that William Murray has been engaged as starter.
