JUVENILES IN NOSE FINISH CHINN ENTRY RUNS FIRST AND SECOND IN MONCRIEFS "BABY" RACE. Two-Year-Olds Shown at Jacksonville Much Admired , 1 and Pronounced a Good-Looking Lot Gossip from Florida Track. Jacksonville. Fla., January 2. G. P. Cliinn furnished - the winner of the first juvenile race of the i year at Moncrief this afternoon in Colonel Cook, a t handsome chestnut colt by Previous Lydia II. Colonel Cook ran coupled with Rose of Jeddah and the entry was well backed at the favorites price. . There were twelve starters, and they were a well-behaved lot. The youngsters in their paddock parade attracted a large gathering of critics. The Cliinn 1 pair were voted the best lookers of the bunch, even though Rose of Jeddah seemed a bit undersized. She 2 is what is termed by horsemen a big little horse, being exceptionally deep through the heart. Goldmine, although having plenty of size, has a pair of L bad-looking ankles. Erella is speedy looking and i J. V. Mays colt, Tommie Thompson, looks like one , that will improve with a bit of racing. lie ran , greenly today, but showed a creditable performance. , Pliant, of the Pons entry, is also a good looker. As a matter of fact, horsemen remarked that they . were a smoother-looking lot than those shown i here last winter. They acted like experienced racers . at the post and gave the starter little trouble. When , the barrier was sprung Rose of Jeddah and! Colonel Cook were off in front, the filly having a slight advantage. They were in the middle of the track and ran straight and true. At the furlong post Rose of Jeddah showed in front bv a small margin, with Erella second and Colonel Cook third. Then i came Goldmine, Tommic Thompson and Lord Leigh-, Ion, all heads apart. Erella was on the inside, where . the going was deep, while Goldmine -was on the ; extreme outside where the footing was- best. At the ; eighth post Erella began to wobble aud in the final I drive Colonel Cook got up to beat his stable companion, Rose of Jeddah, a hose. Goldmine was third twji lengths "back and a head in advance of Erella. Pliant met -with interference and was pulled up. Tho quarter mile was run in 23$. a creditable performance ; considering the condition of the track, which was deep and heavy. Colonel Cook and Aviator were the onlv successful favorites Jockey McCahey rode three winners and ; Deavenport two. Jockey Ohert will be out of the saddle for a few weeks owing to blood poisoning in his right hand. Danger Mark, which was thrown against the inner rail, came out of the mixup in bad shape. The colt struck the fence with his shoulder and was exceedingly lame when caught. Rutwell. who had the mount, and who fell off. escaped uninjured. . Camel, winner of the sixth race, was advanced 1X1 over his entered soiling price of hB400 by .1. W. Pangle. but was protected and bought in by his owner, II. MeCarren. The novelty race, in which two men, two mules, two thoroughbreds and an automobile started, proved a taking feature this afternoon. It was a handicap affair and the winner turned up in C. E. Howling, a local runner, who beat It. E. Kennedy bv alwut live yards. Ren Double, one of tho thoroughbreds, was third. -Mauager II. D. Brown is arranging a race for women riders, to be carded on one of the ladies days scheduled for next mouth. Recent work-outs at Moncrief: Amanda Lee Half mile in 52.
