TAMPA HAS AUSPICIOUS OPENING; Tampa. Fla.. January 2. Todays attendance at the opening of the West Tampa track exceeded the expectations or the management and outnumbered any former racing crowd in this localitv. Mavor McKay and other city officials graced the occasion by their presence and society was out in full force. Ideal summer weather prevailed and tho racing was immensely enjoyed. Wayne Joplin began auspiciously by winning half the card with Tony AV.. Parkview and Elizabethan. His good iockey, Ted Koenier, making his first appearance in the saddle since his injury at -Latonia. piloted Parkview and Elizabethan from his employers stable and also scored on Syzygy. During the afternoon the officials reprimanded some ot the riders who attempted to resort to rough tactics. They mean to be severe, and as an indication of what is in store jockeys Leo Jackson, B. Haynes and C. Rowe were denied the privilege of accepting mounts here. Jockey P. Murphys riding license is also being held up. Several others are on the judges tab. Four books and one combination lwok handled the speculation. It was a bit light, hut promises improvement. The track police and city constahularv and deputy shenfts have corralled all the known touts.
