COLD WEATHER AFFECTS JUAREZ PATRONAGE El Paso, Tex., January 2. Intense cold prevailing throughout this section of the country was rcsiKm-sible for a moderate attendance at Terrazas Park today. Tho card was ordinary and had no special feature. The second, third and sixth races attracted the best lipids. The race for two-year-olds drew the full complement of starters and resulted iu a good contest. It was won by Bessie Frank, a Texas-bred youngster from the stable of J. F. Newman, which showed a nice turn of speed throughout. Speculation was brisk in the ring and as but two favorites won. the books had the better of it. Marian Casey, winner of the second race, was sold this morning to T. Wilson, of EI Paso, and after winning tho race was run up to 00 bv W. A. Buck, her former owner, but was retained by Mr. Wilson. The stewards wore somewhat dissatisfied with tho ride given Ellerd in the fourth race by jockey Van-dusen and have this rider under investigation. Tony Licalzi, of Xew Orleans, arrived today en route to Los Angeles, and will remain for a few days. Extremely cold weather for this section materially affected yesterdays attendance, the usually large holiday crowd failing to appear. The Ano Xuevo Handicap, the feature of the day. attracted a field composed of tho best horses racing hero, Angelus being the only absentee of those named overnight. Polls, from the stable of R. L. Thomas, was returned an easy victor. The "baby" race attracted a fine-looking field of youngsters, and the honor of winning the first race of the year, as well as tho first for two-vear-olds, fell to Sam Lazarus, with the good-looking colt, Royal Tea. It was hardly a true-run race, however. At the start the horses with outside positions ran to the rail, destroying the chances of those occupying inside -positions by causing them to pull up. The public had a disastrous day, but one favorite winning. J. L. Brown, with Enfield and four other horses, crrived from Oakland today, also J. M". Stowe with Biskra. H. M. Mason did not accompany the ship- ment, he having decided at the last moment to remain at Oakland. The failure of Meadow to place in the handicap was a blow to tho talent. She ran far below her tnie form and appeared to sulk throughout the running. Several of the older horses of W. G. Yankes string are at present out of commission from trilling causes in most instances. Gilpy, unbeaten as yet here, has been sore, and as a consequence has not been to the post for nearly a month. Jupiter Joe is not as yet ready for racing, owing to his sickness of last fall, and Sempronium, after winning his only start, pulled up so lame as to make it amount to almost a breakdown. This is the stable in which Col. W. E. Applegate owns an interest. Messrs. Yanke and Applegate own separately the two-year-olds they have here aud are not partners in the juvenile end of the racing string. The colored trainer. William Walker, has the Applegate buuch in charge.
