AETEE, LEGISLATIVE RELIEF PEOPLE OF JACKSONVILLE IN FAVOR OF CONTINUATION OF RACING. Patronage of Sport at Moncrief Receives Impetus from Influx of Tourists to Florida Points Kentuckians Make a Cleanup. Jacksonville, Fin., January 14. With tho tourist season in Florida now in full swing, every train and ship from the north bringing down largo Humberts of visitors, the attendance at Moncrief Iark has almost doubled of late. The crowds that are now patronizing the sport comfortably fill the spacious grandstand. The conditions during the past week were simply ideal, the weather being balmy and springlike, while i he track was in splendid condition for racing. AVith these improvements in racing conditions, came an improvement in the class of horses participating and also an improvement in the sport. There was an average of twenty-two or three layers in line and speculation was exceedingly brisk. There were several two-year-old races during the week. They all tilled to the limit and several likely-looking youngsters started for the lirst time. As vet nothing lias been shown that looks sensational. The best that has been to the iost probably is Rose of jeddah, although many fancy her stable companion, Coionel Cook. Hose of Jeddah showed a splendid performance when she ran a quarter over a slow track in 23. T. C. McDowell started a couple of probale gcod ones in Star Jasamine and Mnzard. One iinislied fourth and the other fifth, but both ran good races. The Kentuckians who are racing here participated in a killing when County Tax beat a shifty lot of three-vear-olds on Wednesday last. County Tax is now being handled by J. S. Kvcrman and is m splendid condition. Trainer Evermau worked County Tax oh Sunday last and lie showed more speed than at any time since his arrival from Latonia. Mr. Kvermau considers County Tax a better colt than C.overnor Gray. lie is an eligible for the American nerbx to be run oil Saturday. April 1 audMr. Kvcrman intends pointing him for that race if he does not previously sell him. Little McOahev has been showing excellent form in the saddle during the past ten days. In the absence of Hell, who is still incapacitated on account of a broken collarbone. McCaliey is the popular favorite. The public appears to have more conh-dence Jn Bell, McCahey and McTaggert than any of the other bovs riding here and all of their mounts are well backed. Musgrave, Guy Burns. Goldstein. Gross, Rutwell and Stanley Davis are probably belter riders, but their following comes from the professional element and not from the general pub- It looks as if the association did a- wise thing in raising the admission fee to . It had a tendency to keep away from the track those who arc not in a position to patronize the sport. There is less feeling locally against racing than there was last winter. The Floridians are all boosting and want the sjiort to continue. This is a good indication and prohublv moans that the racing associations of the state inav obtain relief from the legislature this spring. All the silly trash that was sent from here 1o the effect that racing would cease with the beginning of the new year caused no end of amusement to the well-informed. . Racing at Moncrief this afternoon reminded one of midsummer sport in the north. Wraps and coats were a burden and light garments were decidedly desirable. Conditions could not well have been improved one and the warm weather and fast track helped to bring out one of the largest crowds of the meeting. The Dixie Handicap, with a guaranteed value of ,500, was provided as a feature, and it resulted in victory for Mary Davis. Ragman furnished contention for three-quarters by racing head anil head with the winner, but in the stretch Mary Davis drew awav under a mild drive, and Milton 15. became the runner-up. In the third race T. M. Green came from behind and beat Besom in a hard drive, running six furlongs in 1:12. George 1. Chiuns lilly. Rose of Jeddah, scored iMiother victory, beating a hand of fifteen youngsters in the opening dash. She had to be hard ridden 1 beat Tommie Thompson a head. The quarter was run in 223. The halter brigade was swelled by the addition of John W. Schorr and J. Karat today. Trustee, running for the first time in Mr. Karats colors, won the second race and was promptly lxiosted to ,000 bv Lon Johnson, then to. .3;0 bv R. D. Williams, and then by J. W. Schorr to ,000. at which figure the latter secured the colt. This was a raise of 00 over his entered price. Mr. Karat hid up Claque, winner of the fifth race, from to ,10O and secured her. Owner Burch protected the mare to ,000 and then desisted. Negotiations for the sale of County Tax were called off today, R. X. Smith wiring J. S. Everman that he had decided not to sell. Mollie Mog, owned by P. Knebelkamp, died this morning and the two-year-old Motherkins, hy Six Shooter Remember Me, in the same stable, is sick.
