James Rowes Lahore, Hailed as Best Thing of the Meeting:, Runs Second to Grover Hughes Des-comncts Beats Glucose in Feature Race. I Jacksonville, Fla., January 10. Favorites and out-i sjders divided the honors at Moncrief Park this afternoon. Oakhurst, winner ot Uie fifth race, was quoted at 100 to 1. He was the longest-priced horse that ever won. over the Moncrief course, anil his victory -line after a long and hard stretch drive, in which lie came from ninth place to win in the last stride hy a head. The lirst live horses in this race were heads and necks apart at the end. In the third race James Howes Rood three-year-old. Lahore, made his lirst start at Moncrief. He was touted as the hest thing of the meeting and was heavily backed. He ran a good race and finished a close second to drover Hughes, which led all the way. It was Lahores lirst effort since last fall at Toronto, and lie should he a hard one to trim from now on. Lahore is one of the prominent candidates for the American Derby, to be run here in April. The mile selling handicap,, which was meant for a feature, furnished an upset, the winner turning up in Deseomnets. which beat the odds-on favorite. Glucose. On the strength of the latters good race a few days ago, when he beat Mary Davis and Tom I lay ward, and ran the mile in 1:30, he was heavily backed by the public. After indulging Compton with the lead for live-eighths he dashed to the front and had a " three-lengths advantage entering the homestretch, when Deseomnets challenged in the final furlong he collapsed and was beaten alength. Kill ford, favorite of the following race, also from the "Williams stable, pulled up so lame that jockey Loftus was forced to dismount. A change jn riders brought an Improvement in Ilucks running. He had an abundance of speed today and made a runaway affair of the race. The Schorr stable broke a long spell of ill luck when Ilanutess won the second race. Van Zee, one of the choices in the first race, pulled up lame. C. F. Clark, Tom Carey. Charles -Godscliau and K. W. Cole were among todays arrivals. W. 1. Kuchen will send two horses to Tampa. W. . Shields will ship half a dozen two-year-olds in the same car. Marie Hyde, one of the starters in the fifth race, was struck by a clod during the running and lost one of her eyes. The horses will be called to the post in the first race tomorrow at 2 oclock. Den Double and Smoker will start in the novelty race. The date for the running of the General Lees Dirtliday Handicap has been changed. It was scheduled for Wednesday and will not he run .until Thursday. . P. Clark arrived here this morning with a collide of likely two-year-olds.
