GOVERNOR AT THE RACES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF FLORIDA OCCUPIES BOX AT MONCRIEF PARK. Mayor of Jacksonville and Others Prominent in Political and Business Circles Likewise in Attend-ancc Antenor Scores in Feature Race. Jacksonville, Fla.. January 20. Improved racing conditions brought out the full quota of race-goers to Moucriof lark this afternoon. There was a decided improvement in the weather and with it came an improvement in the sport. Evenly balanced llelds went to tho post in a majority of the races and keen sqwrt resulted. Three favorites scored, the successful choices belli? Danceaway, Abrasion and Antenor. .Many persons prominent in local business and political circles were present, anion? them Governor Gilchrist, Mayor Jordan and Senator II. II. Buck-iiian. who occupied one of the boxes in the reserved section of the grandstand. The fourth race, which was the feature, brought out a tield of good three-year-olds. Antenor and Mindinette, coupled as the W. I1. Austin entry, ruled favorite, and the former won after making all the pace. There was a shift of riders in this race, Warren being substituted for Loftus on Antenor and McCahey for Goose on Patrick S. Why the change was made could not be learned. The brcders purse went to Danceaway. lie was one ot the few stallions to win a race of this kind and it means his retirement from the turf. The association, is making a special effort to secure stallions to cover every county in the state. Jockey Gould was suspended for three days by the starter for disobedience at the post. Begone broke down during the running of the llfth race and probably will be turned over to the Florida Breeding Bureau. W. Burbridge. of Havana, was a visitor at Mon-erief this afternoon aiid was loud in his praise of the splendid plant that II. I. Brown built here. Jane Swift, which finished second in the Breeders purse, was exceedingly lame when she pulled uii. V. Shields patched up the mare for this race and wagered heavily on her chances. Captain Presgravc. who trains a large stable of horses for Thomas Clyde, is still here. He has in training a string of thirty-four horses at Salisbury. Md. Tills is the winter quarters of .thp. Clyde stable, and many good ones have been tdovplopodthcre. The string this year will consist principally of two-year-olds. There are fifteen in the lot and nearly all have shown good trials. There are many first-class three-year-olds in the stable that will bear watching. Captain Presgravc always has his horses ready for tho early racing and will be in condition to start at Baltimore. The horses are being steadily gone along with, and as it will not be long before the cold weather breaks in the state of Maryland they will be condltoned for the harder work to clonic. Probably the best of the- older horses is Busy, which ran good races last season. Dalhousie Is said to have greatly improve in the nast few months and will be the representative ill the stake events. Ihil Goldstein, who has been riding in good form here, will be with the string. Killingsworth, an apprentice, will do the lightweight work. As a result of the success of the novelty races that brought together man. machine and beast. Manager Brown is planning for another style of amusement. The next will bo in the way of a race for automobiles alone, to bo run prior to the race for lady riders on St. Valentines Day, February 14.
