AMERICANS IN ENGLISH HANDICAPS. January 3 was a great turf day in England because on that day a vast array of stake races of prime importance closed for entries. Nominations of American-bred horses were numerous. Among the events of high interest were the Lincolnshire Handicap, LiVeriiool Spring Cup, Kemptou Park Queens Prize, Great Metropolitan Handicap. City and Suburban Handicap, Victoria Cup, Kemptou Park Great Jubilee Handicap, Coronation Cup; Ascot Gold Cup and Alexandra Plate. These are the star events of English spring and early summer racing for throe-year-olds and over. The Lincolnshire is the first great race of each year and will be decided Tuesday, March 21, 1011. It is a straight mile dash for ,000 and secured sixty-four entries. Mr. 1L, P. Whitneys nominations are the live-year-old horse Perseus and four-year-old colt New Castle. Other American horses nominated by English owners ore Wamba, Donnez Moi. Oversight and Esperanto. The Liverpool Spring Cup was this year changed to a race for three-year-olds only. It is a mile dash for ,000 and closed with thirty-five entries, of which the Americans are Charles Carrolls" Beck-messer, by Meddler Becky Sharp and II. P. Whitneys Handyburg, by Hamburg Endurance by Right. Last year Beckuiesser won two races out of live attempts, while Ilardyburg was- -unplaced in his two starts. The race will be run March 23. The Queens Prize, a handicap at a mile and a half for ,000. will be run at Kempton Pari; April 17. Maiiy of the best handicap horses are engaged, two of last years crack thruo-year-olds, Bronziuo and Charles OMalley. being conspicuous. L. AVi-nans Dalmatian, A. Belmonts Merry Task and J. B.. Joels Waterwecd are the American-bred candidates. The Great Metropolitan Handicap will be run at Epsom April IS. It is a dash of two miles and a quarter for ,000 and of its forty-eight nominations only J. B. Joels Waterwced and Major McLaughlins Columbus are American-bred. The City and Suburban Handicap will be decided at Epsoni April 10. It is a dash of a mile and a quarter for 0,000, hut has only attracted two Americans, L. AVinans Sir Martin and Dalmatian. The 1911.sh,250 Victoria Cup will be run at Hurst Park Saturday, April 29. It is at seven furlongs with forty-seven entries, of which Mr. Whitneys Perseus, Borrow, Whisk Broom and Bashti. Mr. Winans Sir Martin and Dalmatian, and Sir William Coopers Top o the Morning represent American breeding. The Kempton Park Great Jubilee Handicap is the richest event of its kind in English, spring racing, being of the value of 5,000. It will he run at Kempton Park May 13 over a mile and a quarter course. Last year it was one of the many events declared off because of the death of King I-Mward. it has thirty-nine nominations among which are Mr. Whitneys Whisk Broom, Mr. Winans Sir Martin and Dalmatian and Mr. Belmonts Merry Task. The Coronation Cup will be contested at Epsom June 1 over the Derby course of a mile and a half. It has twenty-four entries, among which are Lem-berg, Swynford, AVinkipop St. Nat, Charles OMal-loy. Greenback, Bronziuo, St. Anton and Bachelors Double. The Americans are Sir Martin and Dalmatian. Last year Sir Martin was the winner witli Bachelors Double second and it was worth ,250 net to the winner. The Ascot Gold Cup is one of the greatest races of the world. It is a dash of two and a half miles for a ,500 gold cup and 7,500 added. Major McLaughlins Columbus and Mr. Winans Dalmatian are the only Americaii-brcds engaged and among their possible opponents are such formidable racers as Swynford, Lemberg. Charles .OMalley. St. Nat. Bachelors Double, Bronzino. Pietf i, Greenback, Rosodrop and others of great fame as tried and proved stayers in England and France. The Alexandra Plato is another Ascot event for stayers. It has ,500 added and is run over a distance of two miles, three-quarters and eighty-live yards. Columbus is the only American horse nominated. Among other engagements made for her, Bashti is in the March Stakes of a mile and a quarter to be run at Newmarket April 27 and in the Burwell Plate at a mile and a half, to be run at the same place May 9. Whether she will le given an educational race before the Oaks conies up for decision is a problem yet to be decided, but if she is started in cillior of the early events named, she will be opposed by good class? trial horses.
