WALKER-YOUNG BILL LIKELY TO PASS. California Oral Betting Measure Speedily Reported by Legislative Committee. After Hearing. San Francisco, Cal., January 20. Starry Night, carrying the colors of T. W. Flynn. won the Santa Ana Handicap In easy style at Oakland today. She was a well-supported outsider in a field of four and, closing fast on the inside, came from behind to beat Pay Streak and Jim Rasey. Maxdico set the pace, but quit. Well handled by J. Mclntym Azo proved an easy winner of the mile and a half race. Jim CalTerata led until the linal hundred yards. Mr. Bishop, the medium of a plunge, took the fifth from Bucolic. Joe Moscr, the favorite, was slow in getting into his stride, but ran into the lead and then faded away. The Public Morals Committee of the Souate and Assembly, in joint session at Sacramento today, voted unanimously to recommend the Walker-Young bill, which, if adopted, will prohibit oral betting and hold the directors of racing associations responsible for any violation of the law. President T. II. Williams of tho Pacific Jockey Club, and W. OB. Macdonough. the well-known California breeder, made strong speeches against the bill yesterday, while District Attorney Donohue of Alameda County spoke in its favor. It is expected that tho bill will come up before the Senate early next week and the indications are that it will pass. Many likely juveniles are among those named for the four two-year-old stakes of the New California Jockey Club. The Gcbhard Handicap, at five-eighths, to be run Saturday, -March 18, attracted the most entries, thirty-two being, named. The Gunst Stakes, for fillies, at half a mile, to be run Saturday, February 18, has twentyroue cligibles. There are twonty-five colts and geldings in the TJndiue, at half a mile, scheduled for Saturday. March 4. and twenty-eight in the Bell, at four and a half furlongs, to be run Saturday, March 11.
