THE NIGGER WINS VALUABLE STAKE. Scores Over Mary Davis in Jacksonville Handicap Lahore Makes Disappointing Showing. Jacksonville, Fla., January 2S. The Jacksonville Handicap, carrying a guaranteed gross value of ,-500, and one of the important events of tho winter season of racing here, was offered as a feature at Moncrief Park this afternoon. The program was a good one throughout. A big crowd turned out and with racing conditions hard to improve upon, spent an enjoyable afternoon. The Nigger proved best in the stake race and beat Marv Bavte a length after a stirring stretch drive. James Rowes Inhoro was made favorite and was confidently supported. Rut it was evidently not Lahores day and he figured in a poor performance. The colt looks to be training light and to the keen eve seemed to have lost tiesli since liis last race. In the running Lahore met with interference and this, coupled with tlie fact that he was giving away weight, had something to do witli bis disappointing showing. At all events lie lid not run up to the expectations of ids backers, finishing fifth In a field of eight. The Nigger showed a fine turn: of speed, leading most of the way and finishing with splendid courage under punishment, to win going away at the end. In the second race Manheimer came from lieliinu in the stretch and won easily, by a couple of lengths. There were some speedy platers in this race: anil the pace was fast from the start. The winner established a new track record for live aud a half furlongs by running the distance in 1:005. Tlie three-year-old Trustee, taken out of a selling race by J. W. Schorr, was destroyed this morning. Tlie colt was suffering from abscesses in the heart and little hope was held out by the veterinarians for his recovery. Jockey T. Koerner accompanied Wayne, 0. Joplin back to Tampa, to which place Mr. Joplin went tonight with his entire string. Grover Raker, recently- suspended by tiand stewards as a result of charges preferred against him by joekev Phil Musgrave, was ruled off today by tlie judges. Tlie ground for tlie latest ruling was tlie use of improper language to. "Thomas C. McDowell. Jockey Gross was suspended . for one week for crossing his field at the start with County Tax in the third race. ; Starter A. 15. Dade received a letter from Secretary Fraser of the Ontario Jockey -Club at Toronto this afternoon informing him of His re-appointment as starter at the Woodbine track for the coining season. Mr. Dade will also-stitrt ut Jatnt?st0vrfl and Pimlico. With the tourist season at its height In, Florida, the crowds at Moncrief Park have "Increased wonderfully. The attendance just now ranks with that of last season, although there are not as many books operating. It has been an unprofitable season for the layers and few of them have won anything. Tom Shaw is about holding his own, as is also William Beverley. Fred Cook lias had a few good davs and some bad ones. Cook still takes tlie mouey until the horses are entering the homestretch ami lie lias fooled some of tlie smart ones who have rushed up to wager on the horse that showed in front in the early stages. Cook handles a lot of money in a surprisingly short time after the barrier is released and many times it has enabled him to round up his book. Charles Ellison still continues in the good streak he had at the Kentucky tracks and is a big winner here. lie has been wonderfully successful in picking winners, tfle is considered tlie smartest operator here and has many a trailer. Joe Ycager has been having his ups and downs, winning one day and losing the next. In the event that the legislature looks with favor mon the proiwsal of tlie Florida Live Stock and Agricultural State Fair Association to permit betting to continue after May 1. it is understood that the plans of the local association contemplate a greatly reduced season of racing here in succeeding winters. One plan under consideration calls for sixty days of the sport here and an equal period in Havana. Charleston is also being considered as an available racing point.
