DERBY ELIGIBLES CONTEST MONCRIEF RACE-GOERS WITNESS MEETING BETWEEN AMERICAN DERBY CANDIDATES. T. C. McDowells Filly, Attentive, Turns Up the Winner American Girl Only Successful Favorite Out of Ordinary Card, Jacksonville, Fin., February 21. This was an off lay at Monerief Park. That Is. the card was of ordinary ealiler, the cheaper class of horses making up the lields for the different races. American Girl, the only successful, choice, beat Nello a neck in the two-year-bid race. The feature race was a seven-eighths of a mile handicap, for three-year-olds. Several of the starters were Derby eligibles. Thomas . McDowell furnished the winner in his Allan-a-Dale filly. Attentive, which beat Dr. Duenner by half a length after a stirring stretch drive. Dr. Duenner, ridden by jTickey Dell, made the pace until well within the linal furlong. When Dell went to the whip he dropped Dr. Duenner s head and the colt sprawled about so that Attentive was aide to yet up in the linal strides and win going away. Aldrian closed with a belated rush and was only l?aten a neck for second place. Monty Fox, favorite for the second, ran a dull race, finishing sixth in u field of ten. lie was iden by jockey Sweeney and, after the race, the judges ordered the lwy not to accept any more mounts at the meeting. The ruling was made on t ho ground of incompetency. There were a number of now arrivals today, among thehi Charles McCarthy. Manager Brown has arranged the conditions so that they virtually leave the race to the young men of this city and the state of Florida. Anyone who has ridden more than three winners is not eligible to ride in this race. Riders who have never won a race will be allowed ten pounds. Riders who have won only two races will be allowed five pounds. This will give the younger riders a chance to get their nerve to ride in the- Amateur Gold Cup race March 4.
