NEWTRACINEARPITTSBURG PASSAGE OF RACING LAW IN WEST VIRGINIA AFFORDS OPPORTUNITY. Poolrooms Placed Under the Ban, But Poolselling on Race Tracks Permitted by Bill Which Passes Both Branches of the Legislature. Charleston, W. Va., February 24. Both brances of the State Legislature this week passed a bill which, while prohibiting the operation Of poolrooms In West Virginia, legalizes the selling of pools ort the races within the enclosures in which racing is being conducted. Governor Glasscock, it is announced, will approve the bill forthwith. The passage of the bill was followed by the announcement that plans are under consideration for the construction of a modern track for thoroughbred racing at Chester, a town that is located In that narrow strip of West Virginia that protrudes itself between Pennsylvania and Ohio, just west of Pittsburg. Chester is within less than one hours ride of Pittsburg and the promoters of the. proposed racing enterprise count iqioii sutliclent patronage from the great steel metropolis to make the venture a success. The proposed track will lie entirely in West Virginia, just across the river from Ohio, within a couple of miles of the Pennsylvania state line, and forty miles north of Wheeling. The site, it is reported, lias already been selected and is pronounced ideal for the purpose to which it is to be put. The name of Claude Varnell of Wheeling, who has been interested in other professional sports, is mentioned in connection with the promotion of the proposed track.
